What do you want out of the Kindle Voyage 2 and New Paperwhite?

Amazon is going to be announcing three new e-readers during the month of October. I heard they intend on releasing a new entry level Basic model, a second generation Kindle Voyage and a new Paperwhite.

And that differs from any other thread at MR how????? After all, the original topic was, "Hey my super, top, Secret Squirrel sources tell me a new Kindle is due out in September. How many times have we heard that line? And oh by the way, Fall/Autumn is the time of year that we traditionally get new Kindles, so no BIG surprise if one gets released. This age old thread topic was a waste of our time, so we turned it into something more to our liking.

I, for one, love the light layer, because it makes the Kindle brighter. Now I can read in public transport, which I could never do with the Touch. I could, with a good paperback or a hardcover.

Setting the light so it exactly blends in with the surrounding light, making the Kindle as bright as possible but without making it look illuminated, is the best way to go for me.

I never read in full darkness; not with a Kindle, nor a tablet or computer monitor. It hurts my eyes and head. Even when reading in bed, I have an overhead lamp on; strong enough to read a paperback, but not enough to read an unlit Kindle.

Just to make sure: I think when people talk about not liking the light layer, they do not mean they don't like light (well, some do, I guess). I think they are referring to detrimental effect the light diffusing layer has on the sharpness. I know my son's PW2 looks soft compared to my K3, when viewed in bright room light.

jswinden, correct me if I'm wrong, but if a lit Kindle looked just like an unlit kindle when the light was off, and still had even front lighting, you'd have no problem, right?

That is precisely the issue I have with it: it is a trade-off. There is also another (sprayed on?) layer to confer capacitive touch, which I suspect contributed to the discoloration (red & green 'clouds') in the first Paperwhite (and perhaps later ones as well). It took me a few months before I was ready to get rid of my Kindle Touch, and more time before I forgot what I was missing in terms of 'clarity'. I appreciate the convenience of not needing external light, and I suppose there is no going back for me (e.g. getting non-frontlit Kindle), but then I'm doing about 90% of my reading on backlit devices: to me the display quality is generally superior, and I like the superior responsiveness of such devices, audio, color etc.

Can't speak for jswinden, but this describes me pretty well and was why I returned my PW back when they came out. It felt like I was looking down through a layer of glass, like viewing something under glass in a picture frame. For some reason the light layer on my Aura HD doesn't cause the same issues for me (note I use it without the light usually).

Hmm, this explains why I found I preferred reading in bed with my old PRS-350 in the lit cover to reading on my H2O. Thanks.

The Voyage came out a year ago. It is due for an upgrade. The PW3 may have been released early to counter the Kobo Glo HD.

I've just bought a Kobo Glo HD and hubby has a PW2, I also have a Voyage and a Kobo H20. The Glo HD is the first device i've ever had that relegates my Voyage/Kindle to the side, the H20 while nice is not in the same league, its too big for me and too yellow, whereas the Glo HD is very similar to the Voayge, with a brighter white screen and just so much nicer to read on. I can finally have a font size that is perfect for me. I can't see me buying another Kindle until they do something about the font choices and sizes.

Yes I love the convenience of the built in front light, but the light layer's impact on screen clarity is real and very apparent to me when comparing my pw and k3 side by side. In a day time room with good light, the k3 looks better.

But it's academic now as I've moved to the pw2 and try not to think about the good old k3 any more.

There's a somewhat similar trade off with high end TVs, which have an anti glare coating on top to keep the screen from being a mirror and reflect all the light in the room. However, the coating does reduce brightness and contrast a bit and adds some visual artifacts of its own. Since I have curtains and can control the amount of light falling on the screen, I'd rather not have that anti glare coating, but unfortunately it is seen as a desirable feature on high end TVs and not having it isn't an option.

Yeah, I had a Glo HD, and I couldn't fault the screen. Very nice indeed, though not such a huge upgrade from pearl that I needed or particularly wanted it. But it had horribly slow page-turns in epubs, so I got rid. Hopefully that was just mine, or the FW release. The font options were the best I've seen anywhere, including in Android apps.

Agreed. The non-lighted pearl screens are IMO clearer to read on than lighted carta screens. Though TBH the new hi-res carta Glo HD / Voyage / PW3 screens (all the same presumably) are extremely clear now. But the difference is all pretty subtle.
