I believe the <center> tag was deprecated some time ago (HTML v4.01 ???) and is not supported in HTML5. See here

It is perfectly allowed in HTML4, but not in XHTML! That is the issue. It might work on some readers and probably will work on most webkit-based readers, but there is no guarantee. It is not in the ePUB specs.
