Arnaldur Indridason seems to be compared a lot to Wallander but I think he is much better since I do not like the Wallander books at all. The next book I am going to read is Arctic Chill (The Winter City). I just finished a re-reading of Pride and Prejudice. The book was mentioned so much in other threads here that I had to re-read it. |

Finished Brisingr. The second half was better than the first. I think my next book will be The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars by Steven Brust. (This is also in paper, as it's not yet available as an ebook. And it was also a Christmas gift.)

I'm reading Sari Robins "When Seducing a Spy." I don't know if I like it.

I'm also rather fond of Swedish detective stories from the 1970s. My absolute favourites are Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall's Martin Beck series, closely followed by K Arne Blom. (Unfortunately, only two of Blom's were translated into English: The Moment of Truth and The Limits of Pain.)
More recently, I have been reading Karin Alvtegen and Karin Fossum with interest. Helene Tursten does a good police procedural. And Ake Edwardson is interesting, but a bit bloody for my taste. |

I can also recommend Johan Theorin. I recently read his first book Echoes from the Dead and it was very good. The next book is said to be better. Two other favorites are Arne Dahl and Håkan Nesser. |

i've not read any of the authors you've mentioned here but they made me remember a series of dutch mysteries that i remember liking, although i read them years ago. luckily i found one of my old paperbacks so i could remember the author's name : Janwillem van de Wetering. i read quite a few of the Grijpstra and de Gier mysteries set in amsterdam. i read them in french but they seem to have been translated into english as well, and they're also from the 70's (okay, they're not swedish).

I have read somewhere, that you have to read Cryptonomicon before the trilogy because in Cryptonomicon there are some bits and pieces of info that will ne helpful in the trilogy (sort of not a must but useful)...I am a bit confused now ![]() |

I have seen the first two films with Branagh and it is very strange watching something filmed in Sweden with Swedish signs and with Swedish names but with British actors. Sometimes I forgot myself and expect to hear Swedish and it took a couple of seconds to realise that I should listen in English. They have also gotten the dialog tempo with the silent parts and the typical Swedish mumbling in films and TV series correctly depicted. |

I just finished reading The Host on my Kindle -- the first book of 2009. I bought it in May, but just started reading it on January 1 after I saw it on several people's "Best of 2008" lists. I can heartily recommend it. My next couple of reads will be paper books that I owe to swapping partners, but I did purchase Fortune and Fate by Sharon Shinn, 6th in her Thirteen Houses series, for the Kindle. I'll want to start reading it soon. |
