I last read James and the Giant Peach when I was fairly young and it hasn't stood up well for me. I really enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I re-read it a few years ago but this was only so-so. Although memories of the movie (Gene Wilder NOT Johnny Depp) did help keep it timeless for me.

The Kill Artist was ok as well, I will have to try another in the series before I make up my mind on the series as a whole though.

In the mean time I received Jenny Lawson's new book, Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things, and just today received Brandon Sanderson's new Mistborn book, Shadows of Self, both from my library after recommending them prior to publication. I have had Furiously Happy for a few days now so I will start with it before moving on to Mistborn which is unfortunately not available for the Kindle from my library, booo!!! I hate reading on my phone but will deal with it since I don't know if/when they will get a Kindle copy and there are already 30 people on hold for Furiously Happy (4 copies) and 10 people on hold for Shadows of Self (1 copy). I will try to hurry through both of them to free them up for others.

My niece didn't wait for the library to get a copy of Shadows of Self -- she bought it on day one. It's in my Kindle Library since I registered her Kindle on my account. Niece is really good to send a gift certificate every so often to cover the cost of the books she chooses to buy.

Today is day one so I didn't have to wait either. I actually had it last night just after 9PM (midnight Eastern) so I got it a little early even, it just isn't a format I prefer. I got the other book about 2 weeks after publication date so I must have been in the second round of holds, but still very quickly.

Lots of old friends are back in Ishmael's life, and we have some new characters, but they don't really get much of a chance to flesh out yet. But we know there's at least two more in this arc of the Solar Clipper universe, so I hope and expect to see some more new friends.
I enjoyed this a lot, too. His novels with Pip as a character are much more light-hearted than the others.

A recent thread asking for recommendations on serial novels mentioned Dorothy Dunnet's Lymond books and since I hadn't read then a while, thought about buying them. But Random House has them priced not to sell at $13.99 and 14.99 a novel. My library has them all if I want to go to the bother of arranging to have them available, but I'd much prefer to read them on my Kindle. Alas, those prices are beyond my touch.

Finished Blood of Dragons, the fourth Robin Hobb book. Enjoyable overall; don't know if I want to pick up any of her other series... will consider it for a later time.

Meanwhile, I found a sequel to a book I read last year, so I am going to read Superheroes Anonymous by Lexie Dunne, followed by its sequel, Supervillians.

I have both of those, but haven't started them yet.

I've got two books ready to go on my reader tomorrow. One is Ancillary Mercy, completing the trilogy. The other is an indie book, Shero, about a cross-dressing superhero. Unfortunately, both of those may have to wait until I finish some editing; the author wants to start publishing at the end of the month.

Well, the e-mail saying that the book had been sent reads "Received: by 10.202.216.4 with SMTP id p4csp1459467oig; Mon, 5 Oct 2015 22:14:07 -0700 (PDT)" I'm in CDT (UCT -5), so it arrived a few minutes after midnight local time. I looked back at the order and see that my niece actually jumped the gun by placing a pre-order in August.

Too many books on the go right now. That's what happens when library holds all come in at the same time and one is trying to catch up with the book clubs.

Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Drum Tower by Farnoosh Moshiri
Tirra Lirra by the River by Jessica Anderson

Hopefully I can be down to two by next week because I see that my request for Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett has just come in as well.

Too much to read is a nice problem.

A little behind on updating my reading lists, so this is what I've read over the last couple of weeks:

"The Shadow of the Lion" by Mercedes Lackey et al. First book in the "Heirs of Alexendria" fantasy / alternate history series published by Baen. Excellent fantasy set in 16th century Venice, where various supernatural forces are vying for control of the city due to its control over the trading routines between Europe and the Far East. Highly recommended.

"Split Second" by David Baldacci. This is the first book I've read by Baldacci and I enjoyed in very much. A thriller in which a former secret-service agent whose assigned protectee was killed when he took his eyes off him for a second (hence the title) teams up with another agent whose protectee has been kidnapped. Very good. I shall definitely read more books by this author.

"Forward the Mage" by Richard Roach and Eric Flint. A loose sequel to "The Philosophical Strangler", both of which are published by Baen. Very good and amusing fantasy. Again recommended.

"Flowers for the Judge" by Margery Allingham. The 7th book in the "Campion" series. Campion steps in when a partner in a publishing firm is accused of murdering one of the other partners with whose wife he was having an affair. Very enjoyable detective story.

"Odyssey" by Keith Laumer. Very good collection of SF stories by an author who deserves to be much better known than his is. I particularly enjoyed the time-travel novel which forms the last portion of this large omnibus.

Isn't Kidnapped public domain? It is on PG. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/421 So you don't really need it from the library.

Ooh! Can't wait to get my grubbies on Ancillary Mercy... I bought it in paperback to match the other two books I have.

... though now that I think about it, I also have Ancillary Justice in electronic form as well...
