So it's Nobel Prize week again...

Anybody interested in the Nobel Prize for Literature? Any guesses, anyone you're rooting for? Personally, I think the prize is pretty much irrelevant, but I still find it fun to speculate a bit. And I'd really like Pynchon to win it. Here's a link to the current odds at Ladbrokes: https://sports.ladbrokes.com/en-gb/b...ure/220019571/ |

Books on a sports betting website... Here's an interesting quote from Murakami, which I found on the Wall Street Journal website: Quote:

Yes, always worth bearing in mind that the Nobel Prize for Literature is generally given as a recognition of an author's lifetime achievements, rather than (as with most other literary awards) for a specific work.

This is true. However, the award often coincides with an important new release by an author. (Welcome back, Harry.) | |

I'm guessing it will be a woman based on recent patterns of winners.

Just noticed that Ladbrokes have E.L Doctorow on their list of possible winners. Doesn't look as if there was a lot of serious betting going on for the Literature Nobel if they leave making up the odds to a temp...

Well, I meant to say that getting their list of odds right can't be a very high priority at Ladbrokes if they have it put together by someone who doesn't know the most basic facts about the matter at hand: a person who either doesn't know about the "no posthumous Nobels" rule, or that Doctorow is dead.

Surely there's a cutoff point? I mean, what if they were intending to give this year's award to Henning Mankell?

There is a little flexibility. There was a case recently where one of the science prizes was announced and it turned out that the recipient had died a few days earlier. But a prize is never knowingly awarded to someone who's dead.
