But I think I can say that download for transfer via USB is only available for physical Kindles. (Possibly only E-Ink Kindles.)

No, you can use Alf for "Transfer via USB" transfers, too. Quote:

We're really getting too close to the specific details of DRM removal here, where we aren't allowed to discuss.

Suffice it to say, you've got it all wrong. What I think I can say here is, take a look at the Manage Your Kindle page. It asks you which E-Ink-only device you are downloading a book for.

Now you can see how long I've not downloaded a book using Amazon or K4PC, and when I did, I just treated it the same as if it was ADE; and that just worked fine.

One more note on this: There are a few books which will not download to Kindle for PC. But you can download them for transfer via USB. These are comics and similar books. You will see an "Available on these devices" pop-up link on the product page. If you send them directly to a device, you get the AZW3/AZW6 situation.

Yes, you do -- The new typography is part of KFX, and if you use a method designed to avoid KFX then you are avoiding the new typography as well.

Early adopters are encourage to try the latest (6.3.4) release of the tools which I've just made available at github. Links should appear at Alf's blog shortly as well. The main change is to support Kobo Desktop 3.17. |

Thanks to those who worked out what had changed! It's always nice to have more than one way to remove DRM.

I don't really want to feed this thread, but I can confirm that the latest version of Kindle for Mac does NOT download KFX files for books with that use all the advanced typesetting features on my Voyage. Doom averted. |

Early adopters who have a kobo reader are encourage to try the latest (6.3.4a) release of the tools which I've just made available at github. Links should appear at Alf's blog shortly as well. The only change is to the obok tool to support import from Kobo readers. |

Confirming, the 'a' version worked as it should for the 'friends of obok'.

As of a week ago, the tools were no longer allowing me to decrypt anything, and the a-release hasn't changed this. From the Digital Reader comments others are having the same issue. Calibre 2.40 Windows 8.1 Tools 6.3.4a Latest Kobo DA 3.18 |
