Op cit (err, previous question): how about Encyclopedia Brown?
The web says this about him: Leroy Brown, aka Encyclopedia Brown, is Idaville neighborhood’s ten-year-old star detective. With an uncanny knack for trivia, he solves mysteries for the neighborhood kids through his own detective agency. But his dad also happens to be the chief of the Idaville police department, and every night around the dinner table, Encyclopedia helps him solve his most baffling crimes. |

End of the world short story - exceptional
This was a short story I read and I've never forgotten most of it.
It concerns a group of people who gather in a friend's yard, in lawn chairs, to witness (and acknowledge) that the world is ending and that the time is known. It's told with a great amount of pathos. Can anyone recognize this? It may have been written by an Indie writer, which would be all the more amazing. Thanks. |

Sounds similar to Ray Bradbury's Embroidery in his Golden Apples of the Sun collection, but that's with three ladies on a porch in rocking chairs.

It wasn't Bradbury (on this story, anyway). It's possible that some of the elements from the story I read do resemble the Bradbury story, but I distinctly remember that it wasn't him. However, you've got me curious to go and re-read some Bradbury, which I haven't done in over 20 years. Thank you. ![]() |

Crime/Mystery, set in WW1, title includes Somme. British version has picture of soldier in British army uniform and helmet on the cover. Anyone got any ideas? Saw in Waterstones few months ago but didn't have time to pick it up and look at it.

Right, this one is a real test, for which I apologise. The books are a fantasy trilogy. The last one was written in 1996. They are by a British author, published by Corgi. The two main characters are a brother and sister. Each are around 350-400 pages long. Any ideas?

According to Random House, there are only 1020 titles published by their Corgi imprint. Here is a link that claims to be all inclusive. Shouldn't take too long to find it!

Also asked on Goodreads. It's an author called Jonathan Wylie, and the trilogy is the Island and Empire trilogy.

A while back I went to my local library and they had a shelf of books that were recommended reading.
This particular book was written by a War correspondent and in the introduction he was saying stuff like how his curiosity had drawn him to be a war correspondent, but now he regrets it as he's seen way too much and he's pretty messed up now (losing sleep, alcoholism etc). Basically it's a collection of real life war stories and he also researches what happens to the various soldiers after they leave the armed forces. I think it covers stories from WW2 and up to the recent actions in the Middle East, so it's a pretty recent book (probably published in the last few years). I read about a third of it after work one day in the library, but didn't have my library card with me, so couldn't take it out. Since then, I can't find it in the library. I'd love to track it down and finish it. I found it a sad and moving read. |

NEW REQUEST:
Mine is a series taking place based in modern times off the Florida coast on an tiny island that was owned by the military. The only structure was heavy duty bunker. The protagonist (I'll call him Guy) did something exceptional in the service and upon getting out got the military to give him a 99 year lease on the island. He got a boat, cleaned up the place and moved in. Seems he was Coast Guard or close as he knows a lot of Chiefs there. There's a marsh nearby that is big enough to hide a small boat and he comes across a small sailboat hidden back in he takes on a drug operation and rescues a strung out girl. Then a large powerboat yacht fowls their props and he tows them to his place nearby. The couple on the yacht is a surgeon and a another doctor who specializes in drug rehab. The treat the strung out girl while Guy fixes their prop. Later on, Guy still has high level ties in the military as a couple admirals come into play when he fakes his death in a boat crash diving with scuba gear and swimming to their sailboat in a planned operation so he can go undercover. -------------------- I can't remember how many books were in the series and I've looked through over a thousand on my 6K titles. I was a favorite but my memory has slipped a few bits as I've aged. Hope somebody knows and has a better memory. I do know it's not the Jesse McDermitt series as I've checked through them again. Thanks |
