Someone on the Internet posted this chat transcript. This was a few hours ago. I think there's definitely going to be a new Kindle ereader (Paperwhite) before the end of the year.

Cool I like the Paperwhte, as it is a reader with a good price/performance ratio. To me, the Voyage is too expensive for what you get extra, while the Basic is not cheap enough after taking out things like the backlight.

I only hope Amazon will fix their prices.

Buying a Kindle PW at Amazon.de, which I CAN'T do, costs €119.
Buying a Kindle PW at Amazon.nl, which will forward me to Amazon.de (!), costs €142 (!).
Buying a Kindle PW at Amazon.com, costs €163, last time I looked.

That is a €23 and €21 price difference, a total of €44.

For me, it's best to go and buy the Kindle in a german store, as I live at the border.

Because the PW3 was a rushed out PW2 with a new screen, and in the PW4 they're going to introduce what would have been the PW3 if they hadn't wanted to counter the cheap 300dpi Kobo?

I shall be interested to see what eventually appears, but since I have a PW3 (which I'm very pleased with) I doubt that I'll be upgrading.

That is not what Amazon CS is supposed to do. They're supposed to make the customer happy, but also to not give out information that they are not authorised to give out.

Amazon clearly had a CS scripted answer for question about new Kindles at the start of September, and now they have a CS answer for questions about new PW/Voyage.

No, because no company is going to tell customers a new product is coming "very soon" if this is not really the case AND their stores on the current product are low.

I didn't mean that. I doubt it will be a Paperwhite. Maybe a new Voyage and or new basic.

But wasn't that more "Subscribe to the game now, and it will only get better in the future." In this case it would be "save your money and wait."

Encouraging someone to buy now in the hopes of getting a software update in the future is way different than discouraging them from buying now because a better option will be coming soon. The former, shady salesmen do all the time, the latter shady salesmen curse out their sales engineers for suggesting to a prospect.

The first is standard practice in the gaming world, with Day One patches getting to be as big as the game on disk.

Inventory control is second only to pricing in the number of businesses it has killed.

As to a new Paperwhite, I suspect folks around here are looking in the wrong direction. Where Amazon needs a new lighted ereader isn't in the mid-market range or the high end, but closer to the entry level.

I would more likely expect to see a new SVGA or XGA screen Paperwhite Basic or (ideally) a Paperwhite mini, for the sub-$100 market. Essentially, ditch non-lit readers out of their product line.

With all the new Fire stuff coming out, I'm wondering if they aren't holding off new Kindles for now purely based on logistics.
I'd really like to upgrade my 2 year old PW2 to a Voyage as I'm really fed up not having page turn buttons in winter but I want to wait and see what the V2 brings... I wish they'd hurry up
