I have nearly finished listening to Bones of the Earth by Michael Swanwick, narrated by Kevin Pariseau. This is the second time I am listening to this book and I find it quite a challenge because it hops around in different times a lot.

Pariseau's narration is really good, but I think some native speakers might find him too slow. As English isn't my first language, this is fine with me.

The book is mainly about a bunch of scientists stranded in the Cretaceous period, and there are dinosaurs. I love dinosaurs, so I might be a bit biased.

What are we listening to? (audiobooks)

I was listening to The Life of Reason by George Santayana, and had intended on reading the whole thing when Voltaire's Candide won the September Book Club vote. As I'd already read Candide two or three times in print, I decided to stop The Life of Reason at the end of Volume I, and take a break to read the Voltaire. The Librivox narration by Ted Delorme was outstanding. Now it's back to The Life of Reason, Volume II by George Santayana, a fascinating book I shall surely have to one day read in print.

I finished Treason's Harbour in the middle of my swim yesterday. This one and the last are not among my favorites in the series; right now The Surgeon's Mate holds the palm. While both books are rewarding in the way all the books are, they also served to mark time. I think the fictitious aspect of the last didn't help; had O'Brian know what he was getting into, no doubt he would have paced himself better! So much time elapsed in the first few books. Treason's Harbour felt like half a book, the way we were left hanging. And, while I thought I'd stop for a bit, I know I've got to squeeze in one more before my hiatus because I can't stand leaving things at this point!

After TH ended, I was surpised to find that I had Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman cued up next; I had forgotten that I had loaded it onto my player. A very fun listen; nice to swim to. I like David Rintoul's narration.

On other fronts, I got halfway through Georgiana and then switched back to Bob Moses.

Currently listening to H.M.S. Surprise, by Patrick O'Brian, and masterfully read by Patrick Tull. This is, of course, a re-read, but what a delight. I suspect I'll start working through the series again, but I wasn't up to re-reading the first two in the series, so started at #3.

Last year I both read and several months later listened to Master and Commander (read by Tull, even; I had picked it up at an Audible twofer sale), so I might skip the third go-round. I do love Post Captain, though.

I'd re-read Post Captain more recently than the later ones in the series. As I had Master and Commander. So this seemed a good place to start.

I seem to be in a "re-read" phase right now both for eBooks and audio books. Probably a bit of burnout, and too many books that aren't as good as I'd hoped. (Or, in some cases, not good at all!) So going back to an old favourite seems to hit the spot. I've just finished a complete re-read of the Millenium Trilogy to get ready for the new book in the series not written by Stieg Larson. And am now starting in again on Phryne Fisher. Not that there's much hope of a new book there -- the author is way too busy writing screenplays for the third season of the ABC presentation of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. And hey, I get it, that's cash money plus residuals. (And an excellent series, I might add, very true to the books, within the limits of TV productions that don't have unlimited budgets.)

I'm about to start N.Parker version of Hardy's "Madding Crowd" after finishing "Native" read by Vance, by far the best "classics'" narrator out there, even when it comes to female characters (Wanda who? Oh yes, Granny Wanda!)

I'm also chunking out a bit of "Crime & Punishment" on Naxos, by time to time. Quite effective reading of a novel i would never try in print.

On the nonfiction side, i'm sampling Carson's USA History out on Blackstone, read by a smooth-voiced lady by the name of Mary Woods (i suspect it's a reprinting of an old reading "for the blind", cos the equipment doesn't seem up to the highest standard)

I have to say, however that my greatest audio delight at the moment is S. Rudnicki's reading of Volume II in Will Durant's Story of Civilization (the penultimate volume is out on downpour this tuesday).

He is THE nonfiction reader, hands down, and the book is fabulous, a treat for history buffs!

Recently finished Face Changers by Thomas Perry I liked this one better than the previous one in the series. The I went on to Cross Current by Christine Kling which is off to a good start despite the character doing something near the beginning which irritated me greatly. I loved to know where I can get myself a BJ he sounds divine

Finally finished A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon (Outlander #6) and have started the novella The Custom of the Army. It is also by Diana Gabaldon and is a "Lord John Grey" story. It is very short -- less than three hours -- so I should have it finished Monday, and I'll start The Scottish Prisoner -- a novel length Lord John Grey book -- right after. I haven't read either of those before (I have read all of the Outlander books; they are a big reason why I bought an ebook reader.)

This is slightly off-topic as it doesn't relate directly to audiobooks, but the MobileRead Book Club held a discussion on the first book of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series about a year and a half ago that you might find interesting.

This was a delightful romp; I preferred it to Holmes. But while there are the more Raffles books, Rintoul doesn't narrate them and the only complete series I could find at Audible does the stories out of order. I think I'll give the Librivox version a try, although I don't think a woman's voice is ideal for the male narrator. If I don't like it, I'll read the rest of the volumes in the nice edition available here at MR.

Next up in my waterproof player is Lost for Words by Edward St. Auburn, his spoof of the Booker Prize. But in a weak moment I went ahead and loaded The Far Side of the World onto my player, so we'll see if I can resist temptation.

I finished listening to The Ice Twins, by S.K. Tremayne, last night. I enjoyed it--it was a little bit slow moving and repetitious at times, but suspenseful and unpredictable, which is exactly what I like in a thriller. Throw together an interesting premise (a year after one twin dies in a fall, the behavior of the surviving identical twin makes a mother question which daughter actually died), an unreliable narrator (mom), an isolated setting (a private Scottish island), and a strange little girl (the surviving twin), and the result is a twisty, compelling story.

I recommend this one--it's one of my favorite thrillers of the year (others being The Girl on the Train and The Kind Worth Killing). I especially recommend it at the current Audible sale price of $4.95.

Just finished A Call to Duty, by Weber and Zahn. A fun and enjoyable read. This is the first in a series about the early days of the Manticorian Navy, before the junction.

Just started Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline, read by Wil Wheaton. Wheaton is perfect for this book.

Just finished re-reading H.M.S. Surprise, #3 in the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin series. This was a re-listen to the superb Patrick Tull narration, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Next up, probably Circling the Sun, written by Paula McLain, and narrated by Katharine McEwan. This is a fictionalized novel about Beryl Markham, the remarkable aviator from Kenya. I've read West with the Night (and listened to the definitive narration of it by Donada Peters, aka Wanda McCaddon), I've read a couple of biographies of her, and I'm really looking forward to this book from Paula McLain, though I can't say the reader is my favourite.
