I'd like to know where they get the statement "Amazon, which controls some 65 percent of the e-book market" from.

I understood that the 65% was estimated by the BPH's based on how much of their business is flowing through Amazon. It's clear from the Author's Earnings reports that isn't as significant a percentage of Amazon's total ebook business as the BPH believe. Amazon confirming that their e-book business continues to grow while the BPH report decline would support that Amazon has much more than 65% of the total e-book business.

Oh well, Amazon isn't talking so we won't know for sure.

It doesn't take much algebra to calculate Amazon's share of the ebook market since the AG/AU whinefest last month told everybody Amazon controls 85% of Indie sales. Plus 100% of APub sales.

It seems to me that traditional publishers have shot themselves in the foot and are preparing to shoot the other foot now. After that I wonder what appendage they will shoot next?

Not me. I have purchased perhaps 4-5 paper books in the last 4 years (since I got my first Kindle) vs hundreds of e-books. And I intend to continue this trend. The only paper books I'm going to buy are books with lots of photos.
I have no more room for physical books in my apartment. And I don't like to read them any longer, they're uncomfortable and heavy (I read lots of fantasy doorstoppers). Just my two cents.

People give me pbooks. I buy the ebook so I can read that and let them know what I thought. I have sent my niece and nephew pbooks because that is what their parents requested.

Shatzkin had something to say about this:

Quote:

Another is that publishers are raising prices on ebooks and making the price rises stick because of Agency. Is all the sales resistance created by higher prices resulting in print sales, or is some of it causing the book to be rejected for something cheaper? In other words, might total sales for many titles be less than publishers would have looked for before? (At least one agent tells me this is the case.)

And another is that the indie bookstore resurgence has occurred in the years following Borders’s demise and the shifting of the product mix in Barnes & Noble. It is worth asking whether the indies are temporary beneficiaries of a sudden shelf space deficiency or whether we’re really seeing not only an increase in print reading, but a renewed interest by book readers to go to stores to buy the print. That question isn’t posed in this piece.

That is interesting ftorres. I wonder if the re kindled interest in paper books is due to savvy shoppers who are finding both hard cover & paperback books at bargain prices in discounted stores, not book stores. The increased price for the same title in eBook. I have noticed these books by popular authors, like Stephen King or Spencer Quinn in discount stores sold New, not their latest book, but still they selling at a fraction of the eBook price.

I almost never read paper books anymore, but I can certainly understand the appeal of discounted paper books. I am getting tempted by the prices especially in hard cover.
