I've started it and liked very much the first part. I'm kind of stalling now at the beginning of Shift 2. So far I don't like it as much as WOOL, but it's still better than books that I've read lately.

Read Ashes of Victory and started War of Honor... here's where it turns kind of crappy: the first chunk of the book is nothing but politics and Weber (the author) looks for a new enemy. I know there's more good stuff coming; but I don't know if it's worth the slog to get to it.

Meanwhile, I've collected quite a few other books/authors, so I may put Weber aside for a while and try, say Hobb or one the the freebies I picked up this month.

I read War of Honor earlier this year and while I enjoyed it I certainly agree with PDurrant's assessment, paraphrased, that it is "a 400 page book in an 800 page wrapper." I think you could skip this one without missing too much if it becomes too much of a slog for you. Wikipedia or the Honorverse Wiki both have good summaries to get you caught up before moving on in the series (spoilers in links: 1, 2).

I recently finished Mike Shepherd's Vicky Peterwald: Survivor (spinoff line from his Kris Longknife series) and rather enjoyed it. The latest book in the main line, Kris Longknife: Tenacious, is now on my reader, and the next one comes out in about a month.

I've also just loaded the second Limbus, Inc. anthology, and may tackle it next. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one, which is presently on sale for 99 cents at Amazon US. Think of an evil corporation that offers too-good-to-be-true jobs to desperate people, with elements of SF, fantasy, and horror; that's pretty close to the mark.

On top of that, I'm also editing one book and doing some worldbuilding to write one of my own. I'm accustomed to an annual books-read count around 150, but I haven't even broken 60 for this year yet...

Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January books are excellent historical fiction mysteries and do a good job of describing old New Orleans. Take it from a 9th generation New Orleanian.

I'm reading a few books at the same time as always.

Mostly I'm concentrating on The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross. It's a history of 20th century classical music, somewhat technical at times but not overly so. The book presents a good amount of history and culture outside music so as to place things in a broader context. It's a good book.

I recently finished The Man From High Castle by Philip K. Dick, a novel set in an alternate history where Germany and Japan won World War II and rule different regions of the former United States. I enjoyed the book until the end, which seemed unresolved.

I just started The Eagle Has Landed by Jack Higgins, a novel about a Nazi attempt to kidnap Winston Churchill. The book seems promising.

Halloween is fast approaching and I want to start reading something Gothic but I haven't yet chosen anything in particular.

This is really the first time I've re-read this series, and I must say it holds up well. Ms. Greenwood sometimes has a bit of a problem with her endings, and tidying up all the loose ends can tend towards a bit forced, but that's really the only structural flaw. And the books are just such fun to read that I can't complain too loudly. A Highly Recommended series. (And, for those who prefer or at least enjoy audio books, the Audible versions of these are very well done and read by Stephanie Daniel.)

I finished Blood and Circuses, and took a break to read Candide, and then Weber's latest, A Call to Arms. I didn't really enjoy Candide, but did enjoy the second in this "early days of Manticore" series.

Next up, Ruddy Gore, the next Phryne Fischer book.

It was OK-ish. I'm not going to bother with the rest of the series. I prefer present day/near-future/near-past fantasy/SF to incorporate one impossible thing. This has three or four. Or five. or perhaps more, depending on how you count it.

Spoiler:

1) People who revive hours or days after death
2) Such people being able to stop another person dying by dying in their place.
3) Artificially created clairvoyants who are able to predict, accurately, that a particular person is going to die on a particular day in the next year
4) The unification of all Christian churches!
5) Mysterious entities visible only to those people from (1) who have died many times.

Next up: Star Rigger's Way by Jeffrey Carver. My last unread book bought back in 2005. With this I complete one part of my 2015 book challenge.

This is the first of two parts and it contains a lot of science discussion but little action. Considering how short this book is, I wonder why they didn't combine it with its conclusion. I already own the next one so I'll read it soon. Rated a generous C [3 stars].

Next I'm going to read part 2 (Venice) in Christian Cameron's Tom Swan and the Head of St George series. These are a group of six short stories he wrote back in 2012.

I do so enjoy the Parker books. I have only the last one in the series, Dirty Money, left to read, and I keep tantalising myself with it (it's sitting on my Kindle, just waiting to be opened), but I'm savouring it for a while longer, as once I've read it, I'll know there are no more...

Now reading the latest Jack Reacher, Make Me. Excellent, as always.
