The Briar King (The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone Book 1)
by Greg Keyes

is $0.99 at

Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Briar-King-Kin...2848086&sr=8-1

Kobo https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/ebook/the-briar-king

Below is the blurb:
Two thousand years ago, the Born Queen defeated the Skasloi lords, freeing humans from the bitter yoke of slavery. But now monstrous creatures roam the land—and destinies become inextricably entangled in a drama of power and seduction. The king’s woodsman, a rebellious girl, a young priest, a roguish adventurer, and a young man made suddenly into a knight—all face malevolent forces that shake the foundations of the kingdom, even as the Briar King, legendary harbinger of death, awakens from his slumber. At the heart of this many-layered tale is Anne Dare, youngest daughter of the royal family . . . upon whom the fate of her world may depend.

Humble Book Bundle Neil Gaiman Rarities, with a mix of his comics and prose work. $15 top-tier, and the average is actually hovering above that already, so you might as well wait for it to drop back below once the initial feeding frenzy is over, then splurge.

It's mostly his comics-related work, but there's some never-before-reprinted sfnal short stories and the original American Gods blog in there as well.

Also, there's a StoryBundle for sf-themed disaster thrillers, curated by Kevin J. Anderson.
Last day for this bundle! All books comes as PDF, Mobi and ePub, some also as CBZ.

The average price is now hovering just under $20. I couldn't resist in the end. 20 titles for $20? A bargain.

This deal's somewhere between SF, fantasy, and horror, so I hope nobody minds me posting it here.

Limbus, Inc. is a shared-world setting for "anthology novels" - and in this case, that means that there are a few stories in the book, each of them stands alone, but there's a "someone is reading a manuscript containing these stories, and we get to see them react" framing device. It reminds me of Creepshow, actually. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, own but haven't (yet) read the second, and hope to see more.

Anyway, the first of two (so far) books is on sale for $0.99 at Amazon US and possibly elsewhere. (Note: Kobo carries the title, but it's not on sale and they stock everything from that publisher in PDF instead of EPUB. I don't know why.) Here's the blurb:

Quote:
Are you laid off, downsized, undersized?
Call us. We employ. 1-800-555-0606
How lucky do you feel?

So reads the business card from LIMBUS, INC., a shadowy employment agency that operates at the edge of the normal world. LIMBUS's employees are just as suspicious and ephemeral as the motives of the company, if indeed it could be called a company in the ordinary sense of the word.

In this shared-world anthology, five heavy hitters from the dark worlds of horror, fantasy, and scifi pool their warped takes on the shadow organization that offers employment of the most unusual kind to those on the fringes of society.

One thing’s for sure – you’ll never think the same way again about the fine print on your next employment application!

Most of Lewis Shiner writings are available for free on his web site (http://www.fictionliberationfront.net) in PDF format, both novels and short stories.

"Everything on the FLF website, regardless of original copyright, carries a Creative Commons license. That license says, essentially, that you can do whatever you want with the material as long as you don't change it and republish it, or charge money for it."

I'm tempted, but I'm already over budget this month. Has anyone read them? The description of the first sounds quite fun, but are they good?

I've only read the first one, but I really enjoyed it. Slightly gruesome in places (not an issue for an un-reformed horror reader like myself!), and some nice humour running through it all.

He's a good writer, although until I picked up the first volume last year I was only familiar with his Doctor Who work from the 80s and 90s.

I've got too many other things on the pending pile to even think about going for the others just at the moment, unfortunately.
