Based on the tablet release today I would not be surprised if Amazon kept its current ereader line up and added a low end 6" e-ink for maybe $49? Perhaps sacrifice the battery or screen to make the price difference. They would peak my interest if they added a micro sdcard slot to their e-ink devices. The possibility of rooting and turning one into a nice epub reader would be nice.

It's vanishingly unlikely you're going to see an SD card slot in any eInk Kindle. There hasn't been one since the far-off days of the Kindle 1.

Micro SD card slots add an extra component to the manufacturing process.
More expensive, heavier device, more things to break -- Amazon got rid of the SD slot back in the Kindle 1 days, for good reason.

And turning the device into an EPUB reader is not exactly one of Amazon's priorities.

When wearing my fall/winter coat, I can put a 6 inch reader into its pockets, case and all. With an 8 inch reader, that wouldn't be possible. (Or maybe, at a stretch, when using an ultra-thin shell/case on such a reader.)

So, while I would like a 7-8 inch reader, the 6 inch one is quite convenient

I agree; a 4GB Kindle (with 3 GB usable) holds around 1500 books, at least. The majority of people won't own/have that number of books. Even if the e-reader would have an expansion slot, it would need strong file management capabilities to effectively use such a large number of books.

edit: Amazon will always build the Kindle to be 'good enough' for most of the public that uses it. While I would like some more options á la Kobo, I think many customers don't actually care. The number of PC's and Mac's Ive seen with all settings set to the out of the box defaults makes me believe that there are many people who actually never change anyhting on an e-reader (except maybe registering it) after unboxing it.

Does anybody still believe that adding components like an SD slot would bear on the retail price of a device? If anything, they save the manufacturer money, and that’s not really a thing consumers need to worry about (yet, still many seem to do)...

There's a micro SD slot on the new £50 Fire tablet so I'm sure it wouldn't cost much to add to a Kindle.

My PW2 is coming up to 2 years old, so I'm waiting to see if a Voyage v2 appears

That won't happen. Amazon has progressively and successfully closed off their e-readers.

While we're waiting on new Kindles, if you purchase a six-pack of the new $50 Fire tablets you get one of them free. Sounds like they're thinking of the coming holidays. Also sounds like they might be planning to sell these things in the beer aisle.

Stocking stuffers.
Big families are targets, too.
(keep one or two in reserve for when the kids break one.)

Yeah, and also keep a couple on hand for visiting playmates (family/friends). No fighting over the tablet. Plenty to go around, ha ha.

Once the kids start pestering mom and pop for movie, app, and game downloads, they'll discover that was a more expensive $50 purchase than they planned on!

Once the kids discover that one click feature, it could get very expensive.

Before anyone comments, yes I know smart parents will use passwords.
It is the ones that say oh my kid doesn't know how to get to the shop screen that will be hit the hardest.
Or it might be the ones that say it is just a tablet... it isn't like a computer. (Yes insert eye roll here)
Yes I gave the kid the wifi password but without my help she won't know how to access the screen. (Care to guess who got on line after the adult went to bed.)

Advice: kids own account with gift cards only.

The little darlings are usually smarter than we give them credit for.

Alright, Firewater Tablets by the six-pack. I'll wait for the keg.
