There is no actual requirement to uniquely identify devices by serial number, and Kobo is not at fault for not doing so.

It doesn't have to, it is rather obvious to everybody - 1 that you cannot, in fact, just buy secondhand items and expect the original manufacturer to give you a new warranty.

Are you trying to say Kobo offers a lifetime warranty?
That should be an easy thing to check...
New Open box is not the same as "second hand"
Kobo does not offer lifetime warranty. Not implied nor otherwise stated. 1 year is manufacture warranty.

Comparison of PID system is for comparison. It is to highlight and contrast product management. I have blacklisted a lost kindle keyboard to protect myself from unauthorized purchases, but never found the lost kindle. It isn't a perfect system. BUT i do know the blacklisted kindle cannot be registered, just used as a sideloaded device. I have seen situations where potential kindle users have swindled as New Open devices but in fact purchased black listed devices with no recourse to resolve the situation.

I wouldn't know.

All I know is the OP claims that the Kobo does not have a serial number, and therefore Kobo Inc. can't figure out when his Kobo Aura was sold and offer him the warranty.

But in this case it was secondhand.
Unless you wish to change your mind and tell us you bought it "New Open box" directly from Kobo Inc. or an authorized Kobo Inc. reseller.

Then what does it matter how manufacturers who do offer a lifetime warranty respond?

You do not need to blacklist a Kindle to protect yourself from unauthorized purchases.

You can deregister the device from http://amazon.com/manageyourkindle
Reporting it as stolen only ensures the thief gets substantially less benefit from the theft.

You are comparing apples to oranges.

When I get any new electronic device (or even home appliances, big or small), I record all the pertinent info I'll need for warranty returns in a text file I store on my computur, including serial number, model number, purchase date, where purchased, etc. I also keep an image of the receipt either from a downloaded source or scan it if I have to.

That way the info is easily accessible and never lost or misplaced, but especially useful if you can't turn on your reader to get the serial number from Settings-Device Information.

As soon as the box is opened, it is no longer new.
Plus with the factory resets, one cannot tell if it has been used.

Unfortunately, the serial number is retrieved from the internal storage, and if the user restores the image unless an additional step is taken to edit the SD card, the serial number shows up as 0's.

You know this thread leads me to a question.
Should I contact the manufacturer of a high temp glue gun because I didn't see some glue and it stuck to my finger instead of the fabric?
When I went to peel off said glue, it took some skin too.
It still hurts.
Yes, I iced it.

So, not really the best way of proving to Kobo when you bought your device, huh?

Amazon Kindles keep the PID in an unformatted region of the card, which isn't accessible anyway without a hardware jailbreak (these days).
It is quite well hidden, anyway. And Amazon keeps their eye on it, since it's used for registration -- if you tried copying it to another device, Amazon would notice two devices have the same PID, and blacklist them for violation of the ToS (try claiming the warranty on that :rolleyes).

What does Kobo use the serial number for?

Generally, if it was a latent defect not discoverable by ordinary examination, you might ask your attorney to contact the manufacturer if there was damage warranting action, since there may be an implied warranty.

But without getting into the legality of the matter, most reputable manufacturers, in my experience, will honor the warranty if they can establish from the serial number or other means that the device is still within the warranty period.

Many manufacturers will take care of defects not caused by the consumer even outside of the warranty period -- case in point, Philips just sent me a replacement for my DiamondClean toothbrush which had battery failure about three months after the warranty expired. I just gave them the serial number over the phone, no receipt (although I bought it on Amazon, so I could have found it if I needed to).

Kobo is obviously not one of these manufacturers. But I highly recommend Philips and their Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush...

Alas the only defect was user error. You mean they can't make my finger quit hurting.
PS: the glue gun is way out of warranty.

Adding that most companies will help if you are honest up front.
Hi I bought this used and cannot get it to update.
"Let me send you the cord. Oh wait this is the 27?? model. Were you using the port on the base or on the device itself? Let me send you the cord that goes to the device itself. Call us back if that doesn't work."

evidently some manufacturers are more forward thinking than others, a happy customer is much more likely to return again, and also recommend highly the product and company to there family and friends.

Hey, if people don't like Kobo's behavior in situations where they don't have to do anything... feel free to come to the dark side and go Kindle.

Or just stop complaining about Kobo, um, not doing anything wrong.

...

I sincerely doubt there are enough instances where Kobo not being "forward looking" has cost them a customer (who didn't seem to be all that committed to begin with) for that to seriously impact their bottom line.

Great endorsement of Kobo....

Still, those of us who have had bad experience with Kobo's products and customer service can try to change this, one post at a time, right?

No. Three things.
1. I have heard enough BS to ever think open box is new.
2. More importantly, retailers cannot sell open box at new prices.
3. I have worked and shopped in resale places.
