The most important thing you can do is prioritize. Pick two or three books that you really want to get something out of and read them multiple times. This will reduce the panic of having to get something out of it the first time because you don't have to.

For the college books, highlight and make notes. Physically write out (no typing on the computer or copy pasting) the important stuff. Nothing beats whatever is going on in the brain through the process of writing when it comes to remembering things.
