Ereaderiq is mainly what I use, and what I was referring to as the list of markdowns, et al.

What they say is a little misleading to me. First, I need to note that the service is for Amazon Kindle books only. Okay, you can use the filter to see "Recent Price Drops" and then you can select "All," but you don't end up with all recent price drops! You end up with some recent price drops, which I have taken to be their idea of the best ones.

Thanks for your comment/suggestion.

Down to just over 400 books discounted today, so it appears some are dropping off.

A lot of these markdowns are done by the authors and publishers now, not Amazon. So, they can start at any time of day and last anywhere from an hour to longer periods (no more than 5 days for freebies, for most publishers).

ETA: Some that showed up on the sort as low priced, but were still $10, seem to dropping finally for the US. Like
Lemons Never Lie: An Alan Grofield Novel (Hard Case Crime Book 22) by Richard Stark

Recognizing my ignorance about how it all works, sometimes I put something like "the author/Amazon." But sometimes, not thinking about it, I put "author" or "Amazon," when I really don't know who is responsible. Just mentioning this so Mobilereaders will know.

Thanks for the info about the UCP sale. Sometimes the markdown will last only an hour? I just don't see the point. I did read somewhere on the Web the other day, though, an author say that she had an ebook giveaway for only an hour because when she had it longer people took too many. ha

I've seen the one-hour promo used with increasing prices in the countdowns, for a fairly popular author - the point was to drive as many sales into that one hour as possible, mostly of fans "in the know", in order to influence the bestseller position and the list that shows highest movement. Fans who checked late or those that found out via social media, often paid a buck or two (or more), as the day wore on and the sale got less attractive.

Spacing the same total sales across a day or three would not have had as much impact on the sales lists (mostly at Amazon, as few care about the lists other places other than those big ones, such as the NYT) as getting them all at once.

Big and Currently FREE--A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years at Alcatraz.

I don't know why, of all of the markdowns that I've seen in the last 24 hours, that I picked a book with this subject to post. I just did. Oh, seeing that it's marked down 100% didn't hurt.

As it says in the book description, this is the revised, reedited, and updated edition.

Alcatraz: A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years. By Michael Esslinger. Rated 4.3 stars, from 146 reviews at the present moment. Print list price N/A (new paperbacks are currently $37.55 and up); digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.00. Ocean View Publishing Company, publisher. 451 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Alcatraz-Defin...tentiary+Years.

Book Description
This Kindle eBook edition has been completely revised, reedited and updated with new inmate / officer interviews and historical accounts! NOTE: This book contains graphic depictions of crime and prison violence.

ALCATRAZ – the name alone said it all… It was meant to send a shudder down the spines of the nation's most incorrigible criminals. It stripped Al Capone of his power. It tamed "Machine Gun" Kelly into a model of decorum. It took the birds away from the Birdman of Alcatraz.

When prisoners boarded the boat for Alcatraz, they knew that they had reached the end of the line. Not only was this the toughest of all Federal penitentiaries, but it was also said to be virtually escape-proof. The island was a natural fortress, separated from the mainland by a narrow strait of freezing water and deadly currents. This prison was the U.S. government’s drastic answer to the lawlessness unleashed under Prohibition, which continued throughout the “Roaring Twenties” and into the teeth of the Great Depression. Alcatraz, with its damp cold and austere isolation, its rigid discipline and strict rule of silence, was as tough as the criminals that were sent there, and by the time the prison closed down in 1963, "the Rock" had indisputably done its job.

Alcatraz - A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years has sustained as a staple reference for staff members and tour guides at Alcatraz, and remains one of the most comprehensive references chronicling the history of the island. This mammoth reference navigates the Island's history through rarely seen documents, interviews and hundreds of pages of historic photographs. Author interviews range from men such as legendary FBI fugitive James “Whitey’ Bulger; Dale Stamphill, a principle in the 1938 escape with Doc Barker and Henry Young; to Atom Spy Morton Sobell, the codefendant of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

Historian Michael Esslinger thoroughly details the prominent events, inmates, and life inside the most infamous prison in American History. His research included hundreds of hours examining actual Alcatraz inmate files (including rare original documents from Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and over a hundred others) exploring the prison grounds from the rooftop to the waterfront to help retrace events, escape routes, in addition to conducting various interviews with former inmates & guards. Esslinger interviewed a variety of principle figures, comprised of both inmates and officers who were either involved, on-duty or on Alcatraz during nearly escape attempt. Interviews included inmates and officers that covered each era of operations at Alcatraz from the early military period in the 1920’s, through the federal years: 1934 to 1963.

His study has resulted in detailed accounts of both the 1946 & 1962 Escape attempts. A detailed account of the 1962 escape of Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers provides rare insight extracted through photos, and over 1,700 pages of FBI and Bureau of Prisons investigative notes.

Detailed narratives of Alcatraz's most notable inmates who include Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz), Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, Frank Morris, the Anglin Brothers, Doc Barker, Joe Cretzer, Bernard Coy, Miran Thompson, Sam Shockley, and many-many others. Alcatraz Federal Prison - A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years, is a comprehensive reference on the history of Alcatraz and contains one of the most comprehensive archives of inmate and prison life photographs (nearly 1,000) from 1934-1963.

Book about Experiences of a Couple Running a Luxury Game Lodge in Botswana. 99 Cents!

This ebook grabbed my attention, too. It's much more light-hearted than my previous post, though. I thought that it looked very interesting and would be a fun read. It's certainly different. I don't know what torn trousers have to do with anything.

Oh, at its price of 99 cents it's a nifty 75% off of the digital list price.

Torn Trousers: A True Story of Courage and Adventure: How A Couple Sacrificed Everything To Escape to Paradise. By Andrew St.Pierre White. Rated 4.4 stars, from 210 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $13.95; digital list price $3.99; Kindle price now $0.99. 4xOverland LTD, publisher. 306 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Torn-Trousers-...pe+to+Paradise.

Book Description
What could possibly go wrong in paradise?

Tired of mortgage and car payments, thirty-something Andrew and Gwynn, and their Siamese cat, sold everything they owned and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise — a tiny island accessible only by boat or air in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge where the rich and famous went to sip G&Ts with lions and elephants.

Trouble soon followed.

Their lives were threatened daily by snakes, elephants, baboons, and a hyena with a plastic fetish. Not to mention the endless—and often insurmountable—challenge of keeping their five star guests fed in a world where the closest supermarket was an air flight away.

Amongst others, their guests included a famous Hollywood director, some French aristocrats, a Mafia lawyer, world famous singers, and the England cricket captain.

Light-hearted and humorous, this action-packed story—peppered with some suspense— will enthrall you with its unique look at life in wild Africa.

Gasp! Another Marked Down Zig Ziglar Book! And It's Dirt-Cheap, Too!

Marked down from a digital list price of $9.99. That is 90%.

The (feigned) shock, of course, is because we rarely see Zig Ziglar ebooks marked down.

Please note that this book is not very long--only 49 pages. But you can be sure that there's a lotta wisdom in those few pages.

Life Wisdom: Quotes from Zig Ziglar: Inspire To Be Great! By Meadow's Edge Group LLC. Not rated yet at Amazon; not rated yet at GoodReads. Print list price N/A; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $0.99. B&H Publishing Group, publisher. 49 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Life-Wisdom-Qu...To+Be+Great%21.

Book Description
“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” Zig Ziglar

A legendary speaker (See You at the Top), author and salesman, Zig transformed the positive mental attitude that fueled his everyday approach to life into a thriving career as an energetic keynote encourager among other businesses. Upon becoming a Christian, Ziglar added biblical principles into his teaching and reached new heights.

Daughter of Earth and Water: A Biography of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley by Noel Gerson - FREE
Quote:
Mary Wollstonecraft was fifteen when, in 1813, she met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

A disciple of Mary’s famous father, the philosopher William Godwin (her mother was the great feminist Mary Wollstonecraft), Shelley himself was only twenty, though he was married and soon to be a father.

Mary and Shelley fell in love the next summer; and several months later they ran away together.

Thus began one of the most tragic, poignant, and, in all respects, brilliant relationships between a woman and a man that has ever been recorded.

Shelley went on writing the poetry that was to make him one of the immortals.

And Mary, as the result of a contest to see who could produce the best tale of the supernatural, wrote the classic Frankenstein.

She was nineteen when she completed Frankenstein, which was at first published anonymously because of the prejudice at the time against female writers.

Though they married in 1816, following the suicide of Shelley’s wife, Mary and Shelley were for all their time together considered scandalous for their behaviour; in fact, they were both quite prudish and disapproved, for example, of the celebrated sexual exploits of their friend Lord Byron.

Their lives were dogged by tragedy: suicide in both families, the early deaths of their first two children, and, finally, the death by drowning of Percy Bysshe Shelley at the age of twenty-nine.

This is a story of love and of genius. Of faith and of rebellion.

Mary Shelley was one of the most remarkable and celebrated women of her time, and for all her happiness with her husband, life was not kind to her.

But she never went under, and her story is touching, real, inspiring.

Noel Bertram Gerson (1913-1988) was a prolific American author, who wrote 325 books under his own name and under several pseudonyms. He channeled his own wartime experience in military intelligence into many of his novels, as well as writing widely about American history. His titles include ‘Liner’, ‘The Conqueror’s Wife’, ‘The Great Rogue: A Biography of Captain John Smith’ and ‘I’ll Storm Hell: A Novel of Mad Anthony Wayne’.

Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.
