Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8

My poky low-spec netbook that I used to test the release version is 1024x600 install worked fine, windows works fine. I didn't change the resolution.

I did install it by running the installer from microsoft instead of windows upgrade though, not sure if that was the difference.

For those who aren't happy with password on every wake, I've accidentally came across a solution to the problem. Basically you remove showing the "splash" screen that shows up before the actual screen where you enter your PIN or password. Then everything works as it should according to how your various settings are set. The only thing I've discovered as a possible downside is that you need the splash screen if you want to require hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the password entry screen (apparently this ensures you have the real password entry screen rather than possibly getting a fake one trying to capture your password info -- who knew?). My 'quiet hours' bug is back. I don't know if this was associated with one of the updates or not but it's back to being in 'quiet hours' when I boot up in the morning.

Mine never fully stopped doing it, about 40% of the time when I boot it's on.

That could be here too. I thought it had gone away after the first major update, but it's back and there's no way to set the quiet hours (like there is in the numerous mobile examples on the web)

Yes, this has been reported several times in this thread. I've not reserved the upgrade (because an important device I use on my Windows 7 laptop has no Windows 8/10 driver available) but I got it downloaded weeks ago, and have two "Upgrade Failed" messages in the Windows Update log every day.

It is old, yes.
But it is being reported as news in the current cycle, mostly by non Windows-specific sources, like this Mac beat reporter at ZNet, usually with handwringing or outrage:

As if MS hadn't made it clear from the beginning that it would be treating the upgrade as a service pack. An those always get downloaded by default.

As a matter of fact, on my Win8.1 convertible, that is pretty much the difference Win10 makes. Other than cosmetics and being able to stay in desktop mode full time, it might as well be Win 8 SP2.

I don't agree. 8.1 was a great tablet OS. 10 is a big step back. It is a much more cohesive experience transitioning between tablet and desktop mode, but I'm really missing the swipe gestures.

They didn't change the driver model.
They didn't change the APIs significantly.

They tweaked the GUI and added a few apps, refined the plumbing.
Now, by the time they're done with the free year and all the added features and plumbing tweaks they'll probably have a really different Full OS release.
But what's coming down now is only part of the full Win10 product.

Call it a Win98-Win95 transition but we saw bigger changes in XP SP2 than in this release, so far. It's actually a good thing its free. It's a good upgrade but not worth upgrade pricing. Yet.
