I just borrowed a random 2014 title from Bucks County Pennsylvania's Axis360 collection. Despite getting the new app message, I was still able to download the ePUB, open it in Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 on my PC, and then return it.

Interesting. Your library website appears to have multiple formats still. My library has eliminated multiple formats for ebooks. The only option is Axis360 format whereas before I could download EPUBs.

Do you mean if you use their tablet/phone/PC apps? I still download Adobe DRM ebooks from both Kobo and Google Play.

I took a quick look at the new Axis 360 app and it appears to use the Blio format, along with the Blio DRM system, for e-books.

I know Kobo has their own that they use for apps, and you coulld be right about scribd and such--I have no direct knowledge of them. But this is the first I've heard of Google Books having proprietary drm. I don't use the Google Books app, but I buy ADE epubs from them all the time.

That's not *internally*.

And I think Google Books uses javascript fragments and suchlike. I know if you want to read a book in the app you have to first upload the EPUB, then download it again -- which is a bit goofy.

Seems to me that libraries should be making materials more widely available, not restricting access to people who can afford to buy the latest devices.

Sorry, I'll put a clear "SARCASME!!!!" note next to it, next time...

I personally read on e-ink readers and I use Windows Phone... For me, actions like that would be a good time to start looking elsewhere.

But at least with Kobo, you can get ePub and you can read ePub. You don't need to deal with kepub at all if you don't want.

Google's ebook platform is a little goofy, yes:

I suspected you were being sarcastic, but your statement reflected exactly what my library apparently thinks. I wonder if there are any statistics anywhere about how a library's shift to Axis 360 affects digital borrowing.

I haven't touched Queens Public Library since they changed. Before then it was part of the mix of libraries I used, which means I probably checked out a book at least once every week and a half.

I have no idea how standard that is.

I have the old axisReader app on my Kindle Fire (6"). Just tried to open it, but it wants me to download this new Axis 360 app, which does not seem to work, i.e., Fire won't accept the outside download, even though I've enabled it to do so. Good thing I have three libraries to choose from. So much for Axis.
