So does Pottery Barn ... they call it a "chair and a half."

hm, "a chair and a half" seems pretty accurate, i don't see how anybody could imagine that thing is made for two people. most sofas around here are 2-person sofas (small appartments, and all that) but they're still bigger than that thing !!

Sofa, couch, divan (what I was raised to call them), Chesterfield, settee, davenport, chaise lounge, love seat. Any other names?

And scoot over, will ya? It's getting crowded on this thing.

Oh no no no .... that is intended for one person. That's not a love seat. That's a reading chair. Just a chair. Just a lovely, oversized, comfy chair. I was really thinking more of the part of the quote that said "lovely reading chair for one person."

Only a man could consider a chaise lounge a sofa.

(absently fingering the pendant of pedantry) --ahem-- say it with me : chaise longue. it means, rather aptly, a "long chair."

Something that has been horribly corrupted in the English. We actually say (and write) chaise lounge .... meaning a chaise that you lounge on.

Strange, but true.
