Good for you! I know i was better off when I stopped checking the Daily Deals at Amazon.

Fully knowing that it's a process and you can only do what you're ready to do, I'm going to make a suggestion anyway. Don't move all your freebies to Calibre. You're just postponing the issue to another time and while you're dealing with it now, you could take advantage of the effort to get the freebies into usable shape. Perhaps, as you go through your archived books, madly clicking delete, you could have a rule of thumb of only transferring 10%? Pick the cream of the freebies, the ones you might actually read, and let the rest go. They're not worth the continued emotional investment and the time it will take to get them into useful shape later. You've already said you can never find a book to read among them! That being the case, why not cherry pick them now and maybe you could.

I can't say anything with certainty, but there will always be deals and there's always the library. Make a clean sweep. You'd feel so light, without the weight of all those megabytes.

So much easier to manage others' libraries....

I just bought a Big Five book at mostly full price. I'm calling it research because I used Books-A-Million, a retailer I hadn't previously used for ebooks. (No problems, BTW.) I went ahead and took the plunge for a couple of reasons:

1. Other retailers have it at $11.99 instead of BAM's $9.99, which I think signals an imminent price increase. Might as well buy now instead of paying more later.
2. The previous books in the series have not been dropping in price, so I have no reason to expect that this one will.
3. I already have the next (self-published) book in the series.
4. I'm in a book club that meets at my local BAM. I can't buy ebooks directly from that specific store, but I can at least chip in with a purchase to support the chain in general.

Seriously, in-store e-purchases should be (more of?) a thing. Retail stores should get proper credit for the "I saw this on your shelves and liked it enough to buy it, but I don't do paper" phenomenon.

Ok, not to diminish your happiness with your new purchase, saving $2 says you are still suffering from the need to buy something on SALE. Now, in your case, it sounds like you will read it soon, BUT, $2 is not that much of a savings. Now of course, I have excused my purchases because getting an audiobook for $2 vs. $14.99 IS a big savings but I have a whole bunch I have yet to listen to, so it's not exactly 'saving' $$ either.

Actually, I've been watching this book for a while, in hopes that it would show up at my favored retailer or drop in price before I finally purchased it. When I saw the price going up instead, I decided that there was not only no point in waiting longer, but an advantage in acting immediately.

And, for perspective, it's book nine out of a current ten. At a quick glance on Amazon, I see two earlier books in the series that are still $9.99... and since the series has gone indie, I doubt there will be any "put it on sale to promote the new installment" deals from the old publisher any time soon. To them, book nine will always be The Latest Book.

Isn't that the truth. Perhaps we should start a buddy system -- you manage mine, and I manage yours.

I've done pretty well this year, but have succumbed to a few questionable purchases. However, my focus on some heavy series re-reads has helped insulate me from random impulse purchases to some extent.

It's been 5 months since my last purchase.

My numbers for 2015:
Books bought: 23
Total amount paid: $18.74 (avg 81 cents)
Books read: 21

All-in-all I am satisfied with this.

Wow. FIVE MONTHS!? I am very impressed with your restraint. It makes my efforts look puny!

But wait..... let me play with the numbers to make me look better.

At 21 books read in 250 days, that's nearly 12 days per book. And you've bought two more books than you've read, so you've increased your TBR pile by nearly 24 days.

I've read 165 books this year (not counting the 8 I abandoned), so that's less than 1.6 days per book. And I've increased my TBR by 11. That's an increased of less than 18 days.

I win!

Well, as much as I've resisted, this has apparently been "hearken unto the call of the wish list" week. In addition to the $10 book I bought before it could become a $12 book, I picked up two $8 books that are next in another series (main line and spinoff) because I'm most of the way through the last book I have in that series and don't want to have to wait to find out what's going to happen next. This new character is interesting, and I want more now, so I'm not waiting. Add in sales tax, which is not only legitimately high here but usually overestimated by Kobo, and I've spent around $28 on those three books. That's way above my average.

All three are Big Five non-discountable releases - from the same publisher, actually - and on my shortlist of "watch these like a hawk" books. (I'm all about ranking my wishlists. I track what comes out so I don't overlook anything, but then I move it to one of several lists based on priority. All of these came from the highest-level list.) It's a situation where I can hold off for a while if I'm not currently reading in that series, but once I start catching up, I want to catch all the way up. IMO, that's what ebooks are for - not having to hunt to keep reading.

By contrast, most of my other purchases for the year have either been discounted indie works or Hachette works that I count as freebies because I use reward points to pay for them. I absolutely snap up Hachette discounts when I see them, because what's 9000 points when you get 12000 per day and have 2.5 million banked? (Bonus: I earn a lot of those points by clicking silent ads while I'm reading. Getting through one book helps finance the next!)

Bottom line: I knew I was going to get these books. The only question was when. The price stings a bit, but I don't feel guilty about buying the next installments in well-loved series. Actually, I'm feeling a little guilty over not having bought one book yet, but it's still in the "over $10 and not discountable" category, which helps me hold off a bit longer. Eventually, though, the balance between the satisfaction of thrift and the need to revisit that universe will tip... and at that point, I'll be okay with paying whatever its full price is. Maybe I can hold off until the mass-market price drop, maybe not.

All things being equal, all books are decidedly not equal. Reducing everything to a number can make you lose sight of that.

I have bought another 20 books today. It was the Neil Gaiman Rarities Humble Bundle that got me. 20 books for £11.60 - £0.58 per book.

I like Neil Gaiman's work. And some of his work I love. I just couldn't let this one go.

But it does take me over budget! Not for the year, but for the year to end of September. I shall have to be extra good in October to make up for it.

It makes me aware once again that I should buy very little that isn't a really good time-limited offer, so that I can keep budget for those items that do fall into that category.

I haven't posted here in a bit, so thought I should touch base.

I've mentioned blowing my goal for the year with the 90% off sale at Kobo last spring. But even with that, and some serious indulgence during the UCP sale at Amazon, I still feel as if I've got this thing licked. Knock wood.

Other than the two aformentioned stumbles (and in truth, I think they were situations to be taken advantage of), I've bought very few books. I bought three books in the last Kobo contest, but they were wishlist books and I had good coupons. I walked away from the previous few contests as my discounts weren't large enough. Other than that, I maintain a wishlist and can wait. If I want to read a book, I'm willing to get it. Even more than that, there were two books I was ready to read and had the hard copy in the house, but since the ebook would make it more enjoyable, I went ahead and purchased it. Truly, I think this is frugality. Not buying before I'm ready to read, and recognizing that general abstemious allows me to purchase books when I am ready to read, if that will enhance the experience. I feel liberated about that. I think it's part of the general re-ordering of my priorities toward on-demand and away from bargain-hunting and stockpiling. Admittedly, the existing stockpile is sufficient for my reading needs for the foreseeable future!
