Yes, popular, but utterly wrong. Besides, its not even funny, unless you disregard all the chain of reasoning that lead to the formation of the Fellowship of the Ring.

As silly as arguing about this is; how can it be "utterly wrong?" Surely the reasoning that led to the formation of the Fellowship could have just as easily been served had the entire Fellowship been flown to its destination(s) (or at least closer) on the wings of giant eagles?

Don't get me wrong; I think the story was better served by an arduous journey. But make no mistake about it: being rescued several times by creatures who were easily capable of at least shortening the journey (there was a need for urgency, after all) IS a minor plothole at the very least. No matter how one wants to explain it away.

Epic? So big that it will never be finished. In movies, and pop sci-fi, that would be Star Wars. And since it's a franchise, now in Disney's hands, this ensures it will be copyrighted in perpetuity and milked till the cow's udders have shrunk to nothing.

Epics, in the good old days, meant works like the Iliad and the Odyssey. How time has changed!

Give it a millennium or three.
The Iliad and Odyssey started as minstrel shows, after all.

I suppose that the whole Indiana Jones franchise could be called an epic as well.

Mainly I mention that though as a chance to interject the glaring plot hole in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark first mentioned in an episode of the Big Bang Theory.

Of course applying logic to stories such as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or Indiana Jones most amusing . Shut up and enjoy the fantasy.

Sorry, but no... If Indiana Jones wasn't there, the Nazis would still possess the Ark, and gained knowledge about its capabilities - presumably enabling them to weaponize it later on. Thanks to Indy, the Allies took the Ark and stored it safely away.

(But to be fair, the Indiana Jones argument is actually funny.)

I'm not sure that losing the thing in the government bureaucratic system is exactly "safe".

For all we know the thing was auctioned off for peanuts back in the sixties and has been bouncing around as a fancy footstool for the past 50 years, with poor Artie running around like crazy trying to get it back.

It really is stupid when you are on a quest that's very important to complete and you have the chance to shorten the journey to completing the quest. Even if there was a good reason the eagles could not get them all the way, they could have gotten them closer.

Fair point. But at least the Nazis didn't get it, so my original point stands.

BTW, it probably wouldn't have been auctioned (the USA is not the USSR, after all). Red tape would keep it stored somewhere (safely is debatable, though), just like the thousands of properties owned and unused by the federal government.

Then again, there is this:

Damn you, I concede defeat. The Ark was probably sold to a Russian oligarch

BTW, kudos for using solid facts to win the argument

Huh

IIRC The movie (closing) showed the Ark in a lowest basement in some government museum/ warehouse

The movie's close showed the Ark being nailed into a box and it padlocked.

Gullible viewers were expected to believe the box still contained the ark when it was then shown being wheeled along to storage .

The original manuscripts had this exact premise.

Except the publisher wanted another 200-300 thousand words to bulk up the books for sale.
