Chios Classics' Latest Group of Free Kindle Ebooks.

Chios Classics has marked down a group of ebooks all the way to $0.00, again.

I estimate that there are about 45 of them this time. The bulk of the selection consists of religious, fiction (novels), and history/biography books, as it seems is usual.

Here is a link, which will direct you to Chios Classics' books, priced low to high: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st_pr...price-asc-rank.

University of Chicago Press Ebook Sale, Part III!

I've got some good news and I've got some bad news. The good news is that the University of Chicago Press (UCP) has marked down another group of their ebooks! The bad news? The bad news is that the University of Chicago Press (UCP) has marked down another group of their ebooks. ha

In some posts yesterday, I opined (and whined) that I was really glad that the books had been marked down but, at the same time, I was concerned about how much money that I was spending on all of the books, because I was finding so many that I wanted. So, good news, bad news.

I wondered out loud, in one or more posts yesterday, too, if UCP might do it a third time in a row. Well, I don't need to wonder anymore--they've done it.

I just learned the latest news, shortly before I started this post. So, as before at this stage, I don't know how many books are in this markdown. I also don't know if UCP has simply added the new ones to the list of the old ones, as they did the last time, or (hopefully) have cleared out some of the old markdowns to make room for the new ones. Anyway, here's the link, once again, for the UCP ebooks at Amazon, sorted by price, low to high.

You know what worries me? This is a holiday weekend in the United States, with Monday being the holiday (Labor Day). That may be the pretext by UCP for this sale. What that means is that these markdowns may continue every day through Labor Day!

Well, you'll have to excuse me. I've got to go turn on the coffeepot. It looks like I've got a lot of looking at ebooks to do.

University of Chicago Press Ebook Sale, Part IV.

Yep. Just noticed that there's a new round of markdowns.

UCP Ebooks at Amazon, sorted by price, low to high. Unfortunately, it appears that none of the previous markdowns have been removed.

University of Chicago Press Ebook Sale, Part V.

There's yet still another round of markdowns.

It still appears that none of the previous markdowns have been removed. So, the list of markdowns keeps getting longer and longer.

All kidding (and whining) aside, there are a lot of wonderful ebooks on sale. And, the markdowns are huge--I would say that the average markdown is 85% or so! Again, I do not recall seeing UCP ever having a sale like this. This may be the opportunity of a lifetime! I encourage you to at least look over the list and see if there are one or more books that you would like to have.

I mentioned in maybe the first post that I made about this sale that many of the books are aimed at academic and/or intellectual types of people. However, there are quite a few that are nearly on an average reading level--almost at the level of the free ebooks that we get each month from UCP. There are also a few works of fiction, including some novels.

It is Sunday, September 6 in the (contiguous) United States now. I am under the impression that this round of markdowns would be considered today's. It will be interesting to see if the last one occurs tomorrow, the national holiday (Labor Day) and final day of the long weekend in the United States.

Once again, here is a link to UCP ebooks at Amazon, sorted by price, low to high.

^ Thank you for bringing this to our attention and keeping it at the forefront. I troll the list relentlessly every day, as I don't want to risk missing something. I've long wanted these translations of the Greek tragedies; I hope the missing volume of Euripides hits the list tomorrow. Which is not to say I've limited myself to them....

Thanks for letting me know. This may sound funny, but I've wondered more than once if I might be the only one who has any interest in these titles. Most people are interested in popular-level stuff, and there ain't much of that here, like there would not be in the catalogue of most other university publishers, either.

Yeah, trolling . . . . that's a good word for it. That's what I keep doing, too. It's sometimes kinda fun going through these UCP lists. Perhaps most people are treasure-hunters of some kind (fishermen, flea market shoppers and some yard sale and thrift store shoppers, hunters, people who use metal detectors, coin collectors, et al.). And what they and I live for is the thrill, and probably adrenaline rush, of making that great find. I used to shop thrift stores and used book sales for the dead-tree book treasures that I might find; now circumstances dictate that it's mostly the digital variety.

I saw some more volumes of that translations series, that you alluded to, in the newest list. I, too, am looking for missing volumes of a couple of series. Hope the volume that you want is among today's list. If not, tomorrow is another day. ha

I admire the self-control that you're exhibiting in "limiting yourself." I am doing that, too, but probably not enough. Hence, part of the reason for my kvetching about spending too much money on the sale. ha

Luck (Russian for "Goodbye," and probably "good luck," too.).

I've been quite restrained. I've only picked up 8 books from the sale so far.

I do appreciate the chance to increase the number of interesting nonfiction books in my collection without spending too much money.

I might actually curse your for posting this, as I've bought far too many volumes at great prices

As these are the sorts of books that never usually go on sale, thanks again!

P1--I'll have to add a disclaimer at the end of my next post about it. ha

P2--Exactly. That's one reason that I've kept posting about the sale (that and the fact that it changes everyday). When UCP heretofore, in my admittedly short experience dealing with ebooks, has had a sale, it's been on only a few ebooks at at time and the discounts were nowhere close to the ones that they're giving now.

82% Off of this Kindle Bestseller on Micromanagement of Children by Parents.

Isn't this often called "helicopter parenting," or do I have that mixed up with something else?

It's the #1 selling Kindle book in the "Child Care" subgenre and #2 selling Kindle book in the "Popular Culture" subgenre at Amazon, at the present time.

Most of the ebooks on parenting that I come across, approach it from a faith-based perspective. This book, however, appears to come at it from a purely non-religious, secular standpoint.

Under Pressure. By Carl Honore. Rated 4.5 stars, but from only 8 reviews at the present moment at Amazon; rated approximately 3.80, from 271 ratings at Goodreads. Print list price $14.99; digital list price $10.99; Kindle price now $1.99. HarperCollins e-books, publisher. 306 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Under-Pressure...WYC57YHY52KJV0.

Book Description
"Why do grown-ups have to take over everything?" This innocent question from acclaimed journalist and international bestselling author Carl Honoré’s son sparked a two-year investigation into how our culture of speed, efficiency, and success at all costs is damaging both parents and children. When the impulse to give children the best of everything runs rampant, parents, schools, communities, and corporations unwittingly combine forces to create over-scheduled, over-stimulated, and overindulged kids. The mere mention of potty-training, ballet classes, preschool, ADD, or overeating is enough to spark a heated debate about the right way to raise our children. The problem is that despite the best intentions of all involved, the pressure to manage every detail of our children’s lives from in utero through college is overwhelming.

Delivering much more than a wake-up call, international bestselling author Carl Honoré interviews experts in Europe, North America, and the Far East, talks to families around the world and sifts through the latest scientific research. Not only do we see the real dangers of micromanaging children, but Honoré also shows us an emerging new movement inspiring many to slow down and find the natural balance between too little and too much. Blending the finest reportage, intellectual inquiry, and extraordinary true stories,
Under Pressure is the first book to challenge the status quo by mapping out an alternative to the culture of hyperparenting that is presently pushing children and their parents to the brink.
