Ours had the one cabinet, about 2 years ago. Doubt that it's still there. There probably was actually a lot in it. The old, old Radio Shacks would have something like bins of different resistors, capacitors, transistors, you name it. The cabinet may have had most, if not all, of them, but in much smaller quantities. It may have been a good space-saving move.

Visits with Dad to auto parts stores were similar, but for me less interesting, experiences.
Lafayette sounded kewl. I don't remember hearing about it. I didn't live far enough north, I guess. I guess every part of the country, back in the day, had some company or two that filled the needs. With Radio Shack being headquartered in Fort Worth, I suppose that it tended to add new stores out first from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I was considerably closer, in the places that I lived in then (all deep South), to Ft. Worth than to New York.

One company that I do remember (and, boy, I've haven't thought about this in years) is a company called Allied Electronics. In the places that I lived, at least, it was a mail order business only. I loved thumbing through their catalogs. It seemed like they had everything electronic.

There are some really obscure places covered in these books!

Here's a place--La Grange, Kentucky--that I visited as a preteen a time or two. I never thought that it amounted to much. But, this guide gives a "three-day tour itinerary"! Amazing.

There must be more to the town than I realized, but I still don't see how someone could spend 3 days sightseeing there! It's a little bitty place.

You might find interesting the following, linked Wikipedia articles or lists, and their linked entries about:
  • The term "radio shack", after which the RadioShack chain was named.
  • The "Tandy Corporation" section of the above-linked RadioShack article, which states:
    Quote:
In 1970, Tandy Corporation bought Allied Radio (both retail and industrial divisions), merging the brands into Allied Radio Shack and closing duplicate locations. After a 1973 federal government review, the company sold off the few remaining Allied retail stores and resumed using the Radio Shack name. Allied Electronics, the firm's industrial component operation, continued as a Tandy division until it was sold to Spartan Manufacturing in 1981.[13]
  • The list of consumer electronics retail companies of the United States
  • The list of electronics districts

I remember, now, that Tandy did buy Allied. Just vaguely, though. It was buried deep in the recesses of my brain, but I remember. It seems like Tandy eliminated a huge number of items that Allied sold--I felt that Allied was just a shadow of its former self after that.

Tandy is known for two things (at least major ones)--electronics and leather. Strange combination, huh? Hi tech and very low tech. As it turns out, a few years after I went through my electronics-mania period, I dabbled with leather-working. I bought quite a few things from Tandy Leather.

Thanks for the memory-jogging info.

University of Chicago Press Ebook Sale, Part II.

Folks, I don't know if this will come as good news or bad news. But I just found out that the University of Chicago Press (UCP) has added more books to the sale that I posted about on this thread around 24 hours ago (post #831). I don't know (yet, anyway) how many books have been added to the sale.

How could saving money on ebooks be bad news? Well, personally, I saved so much money in the first part of the sale that it's about to put me in the poorhouse. I don't know if I can stand to save anymore. ha. Also, the books that went on sale earlier are still on sale. But, unfortunately, I don't know of a way to view just the newly added books--it looks like the only way to find the newbies is to look through the first part of the entire list of UCP books, all over again (if anyone knows of a workaround to this, please let us know!).

Here's the linky, again, of the UCP books at Amazon, sorted by price, low to high: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st_pr...price-asc-rank.

heh... some days I fell like I know what I do for a living...

Radio Shack used to be good when I was a kid, but then after the personal computer market exploded, they kind of wandered off in to la-la land. They jumped back into the game with arduino kits just a tad too late, and the local store closed right after they announced their bankruptcy.

Lucky for me, I have my work. And there are two honest-to-god electronics parts stores just down the road from where I work, though I never have time to do hobbyist electronics at home.

If anyone sees any books related to Mathematics History, I'll jump on that niche, too...

Thanks for posting! There's some great stuff on sale in there. Just picked up The Negro In Illinois (The WPA Papers) for $2.99! Amazon US

That's a book from a WPA project, featuring writers such as Richard Wright, that was never published at the time written and only assembled and published a year or two ago. I'd wishlisted it when it came out for $45 and never expected to see it go on sale, much less for a price like this. Thanks!

A few of those are also on sale at Amazon Canada. I picked up Richard Lattimore's translation of The Iliad for $CDN 2.33 and Harvey C. Mansfield's translation of Machiavelli's The Prince for $CDN 1.99

Would it make you feel any better if I told you that the ones that are not available in Canada weren't all that good anyway? ha

Sorry that there aren't more available to you in Canada--I do sympathize, and I do empathize, too, because the situation is sometimes reversed in the U.S.

Glad you find some good stuff. That's what makes the effort of posting (and sometimes looking around first) all worth it.

Fortunately, or unfortunately--however you want to look at it--I found lots more with this new round of markdowns. I spent way more money that I should have. I'm almost afraid to check and see if UCP marked down some more since yesterday. What if they end up putting their whole repository of ebooks on sale! Arrghhh! I wonder if Kickstarter would loan me some money. ha
