"Alter metadata" window (both type): if I drag the border sign in the window, alter the ratio between the width of the left (cover), medial (tags,...) and right (comments) part, then close the window, my settings will lost: opening a window again, width ratio will the default, not the previously used. I wish to preserve it.

It will be better to addresse to other subforum, like "ideas to change in Calibre" - but I could not find any similar.

I wish to open the book's folder in the Total Commander, instead of windows explorer.

Purposes:

1. Manually edited the file, but want to keep the previous version(s) (for example: a horrible big file because of good quality images - I wish to preserve it, but use a downsampled version for reading).

2. An audio book's flac/mp3 files wish to store as 1 book.

3. Book in format of many jpg files (easier to list with Irfanview, than as a big PDF from images).

...and so on.

1) No. calibre is not a version control system, and that request has come up numerous times -- the developer isn't interested. Not every program has to be Google Docs.
Find another program that enables you to store versions of files.
Or use something like OSX Time Machine -- on linux there are a couple GUIs over rsync, you should be able to figure something out with one or another of the various backup programs for Windows.

2) You can zip up the files, and add the ZIP to calibre

If I understood exactly, it totally replaces IE with TC. This is not the variant I wish. Some times IE easier for some quick tasks (drag and drop 1-2 files to other folder, without a popup panel of the TC - but, in general, I wish to preserve this popup). I already have the right click option "Open in TC", and this is the better for me: it gives me an option to choose, every time.

Probably you are right. Simply, I was afraiding to overheat the forum's motor, if to write down all my wishes about to change in Calibre.

Ideas to change calibre can be posted in the main forum, or any of the subforums - eg an idea to change the book editor would go in the Editor subforum. If in doubt put it in the main calibre forum; a mod will move it if warranted.

If you have the skills, and you are prepared do the development work to actually implement an 'idea', then it can be discussed in the Development subforum.

The explorer referenced in the link eschwartz provided is explorer.exe which is commonly called Windows Explorer latterly File Explorer, the executable for Internet Explorer is iexplore.exe - that's been so since Windows 98!

I would be very wary of using any of the file manager "Replace Windows Explorer" options. The explorer.exe program is tightly integrated with the Windows kernel. I've see problems with TC, Directory Opus, and xPlorer² implementations. Not with calibre specifically, but generally, e.g. screw up all or parts of the Control Panel, problems with some bit torrent clients.

Besides which, you use should use calibre itself to manage the library directory structure, if use you a file manager then you'll likely as not break the nexus between it and the database.

It was an inadvertence, of course.

An offtopic opinion about TC: yes, TC can not replace WE. But from other side, I can not imagine using of personal computer without Total Commander. The feeling is as a car, without wheels.

I feel much the same about xPlorer² - but I wouldn't touch its Windows Explorer replacement feature with a 20' barge pole, nor any of the others.

Can you repost what you just posted in the plugin ideas thread here please, and I'll remove it from there - I'm sick of merging threads

Useful in other aspects, too. For example, in tags "nationality" subtag will autofill every time; will more clear the nationality in cases of multiple authors.

By the way, why nationality must be in tags, not on a level upper, as language?
