And a couple of other Soho Crime titles at these price points ($1.99) and couponable with that same coupon (sale50):

Rock Paper Tiger by Lisa Brackmann (first in Ellie Cooper series). Not nominated for any awards, but the second in the series, Hour of the Rat, was a finalist for the 2014 Left Coast Crime Calamari Award.

Spoiler:
Quote:
American Iraq War veteran Ellie Cooper is down and out in Beijing when a chance encounter with a Uighur—a member of a Chinese Muslim minority—at the home of her sort-of boyfriend Lao Zhang turns her life upside down. Lao Zhang disappears, and suddenly multiple security organizations are hounding her for information. They say the Uighur is a terrorist. Ellie doesn’t know what’s going on, but she must decide whom to trust among the artists, dealers, collectors, and operatives claiming to be on her side—in particular, a mysterious organization operating within a popular online role-playing game. As she tries to elude her pursuers, she’s haunted by memories of Iraq. Is what she did and saw there at the root of the mess she’s in now?

The Ghosts of Belfast (apa The Twelve) by Stuart Neville is the first in the Jack Lennon series, and it was nominated for a bunch of awards.
link (Kobo US): https://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/eb...sts-of-belfast
Spoiler:
Quote:
“The best first novel I’ve read in years...It’s a flat-out terror trip.”—James Ellroy

“Not only one of the finest thriller debuts of the last ten years, but also one of the best Irish novels, in any genre, of recent times.”—John Connolly

The Ghosts of Belfast is the book when the world finally sits up and goes WOW, the Irish really have taken over the world of crime writing. Stuart Neville is Ireland’s answer to Henning Mankell.”—Ken Bruen

“Sure to garner attention and stir lively pub discussions.”—Library Journal

“Neville’s debut novel is tragic, violent, exciting, plausible, and compelling. . . . The Ghosts of Belfast is dark, powerful, insightful, and hard to put down.”—Booklist

“Neville’s debut is as unrelenting as Fegan’s ghosts, pulling no punches as it describes the brutality of Ireland’s 'troubles' and the crime that has followed, as violent men find new outlets for their skills. Sharp prose places readers in this pitiless place and holds them there. Harsh and unrelenting crime fiction, masterfully done.”—Kirkus

“[Stuart] Neville has the talent to believably blend the tropes of the crime novel and those of a horror, in the process creating a page-turning thriller akin to a collaboration between John Connolly and Stephen King. . . [The Ghosts of Belfast] is a superb thriller, and one of the first great post-Troubles novels to emerge from Northern Ireland.”—Sunday Independent (Ireland)

Fegan has been a “hard man,” an IRA killer in northern Ireland. Now that peace has come, he is being haunted day and night by twelve ghosts: a mother and infant, a schoolboy, a butcher, an RUC constable, and seven other of his innocent victims. In order to appease them, he’s going to have to kill the men who gave him orders.

As he’s working his way down the list he encounters a woman who may offer him redemption; she has borne a child to an RUC officer and is an outsider too. Now he has given Fate—and his quarry—a hostage. Is this Fegan’s ultimate mistake?

Stuart Neville is a partner in a multimedia design business based in Armagh, northern Ireland. This novel, also known as The Twelve in the UK and Ireland, is the first in a series.

  • Billy Boyle: A World War II Mystery by James R. Benn (SYKM, Wikipedia) the 1st in his long-running historical mystery series starring a Boston cop turned aide and undercover spy/murder solver in Europe for his uncle-by-marriage General Eisenhower, with cases based on actual historical incidents (with notes in the back). This has previously been offered free in the past, a long time ago, and I've since read all the novels in the series and very much enjoyed them, so this is highly recommended if you're interested in nicely-researched military mysteries set in this era. Two novels in the series have been award finalists, according to SYKM.
  • Wyatt by Australian author Garry Disher (SYKM, Wikipedia), 7th in the eponymous series which seems to be a crime/suspense thing starring a thief in Melbourne. This one won the 2011 Ned Kelly Award, according to SYKM.

@ $2.99
  • Outsider in Amsterdam by the late Dutch author Janwillem van de Wetering (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his long-running Amsterdam Cops series starring Exactly What It Says In The Series Title of vintage cases, this installment originally out in 1975. One of the series was an Anthony Award finalist, according to SYKM.
  • The Last Detective by British author Peter Lovesey (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his long-running Peter Diamond series of contemporary detective mysteries starring a policeman in Bath, England. This one was the 1992 Anthony Award winner for Best Mystery, according to SYKM.

Free Today Amazon UK - The Gospel Makers by Anthea Fraser

'The Revelationists, flocking to organize in rural Shillingham, are a secretive bunch. They are taking over the village with their extreme religious mantra, and seem to be reaching a cult-like status. Detective Chief Inspector David Webb is instinctively suspicious of the group, so when one of his police officers, Nina Petrie, offers to investigate undercover, he agrees. But Detective Inspector Petrie soon finds herself being sucked in... Could the apocalyptic message the sect is preaching be based on reality? Or are they using illegal means to dupe their followers? When a wine merchant is found murdered in his hotel room the plot thickens. And Webb's attention quickly shifts to the discovery of the dead man. Who was he, and who were the mysterious couple he was last seen with? Even after his identity has been established, there appears to be no motive for his murder… Did he have anything to do with the Revelationists? Or was his death at the same as The Gospel Makers increasing popularity just a coincidence...? '

The Case of the Violent Virgin (Ed Noon Mystery #7) - Michael Avallone

Amazon US----Amazon UK

Spoiler:
ED NOON MYSTERY #7

"My eyes met hers and stopped. They had to. You just didn't look into eyes like those and turn away. Her voice was one thing. Her eyes were something else again. And she wasn't looking through me this time. I was getting a long once-over too."--Ed Noon, Private Eye

A deluxe express train to Chicago is the setting for a missing rare object d'art, the legendary statue known as the Violent Virgin and an equally fabulous diamond, the Blue Green. Noon mixes with a lovely lost blonde, a rich redhead with a dachshund, a polysyllabic bigwig and a venomous pair of remorseless killers. This case is author Avallone's tribute to The Lady Vanishes and The Maltese Falcon.

ED NOON SERIES

The Adventures of Ed Noon, Private Eye, span over 30 novels written between 1953 and 1990. Noon starts out dirt poor with a tiny office in Midtown Manhattan (his "Mouse Auditorium") but success moves him to better digs, a lovely secretary (Melissa Mercer) and, eventually, the most important client of all: the President of the United States. The series concludes with a daring turn toward science fiction in the last two novels. Through it all, the wisecracking Noon is consistent: a movie and baseball-obsessed romantic who always fights the good fight. And, more often than not, wins.

Arthur Hailey's Hotel and Airport are on sale at $1.99 (local dollars) in Australia and New Zealand.

Open Road are releasing Hailey's Strong Medicine, Evening News, and Detective on 20 October. I think this will leave Runway Zero-Eight his only novel not available as an ebook.

Edit: Special price is only at Amazon and Kobo so far, but it will probably end up the same eveywhere as usual.

Free Today on Amazon UK- Dead Man's Bluff by Roderic Jeffries

'Daniel Knott was a bad farmer and a worse husband. When his charred remains are found among the burnt-out farm buildings, the police feel the solution to the tragedy will be close at hand. That is, until another body is found. It may have been identified as an agricultural salesman who had dodgy business dealings with Knott, but local Inspector Clayton is far from convinced. Against his superior’s orders, Clayton digs deeper into the case.
What he discovers will tear initial suspicions, and the local community, into pieces… '

Free Today on Amazon UK- Cossack Attack by Charles Whiting ( aka K. N. Kostov)

'It is 1942, and the Russian defences have held… for now. In his lair Hitler grows ever greedier for the black gold, the Caucasian oil fields he needs to fuel the Nazi war machine. Some of his generals fear the cost of acquiring it will outweigh the gains, but the Führer has acquired a secret weapon, one as old as the accursed Northern wastelands. Its target: the Tartar Redoubt, a position recently occupied by a battalion of glory-seeking Russian Guardsmen. Unleashing the Cossacks, as horrific and bloodcurdling as the hounds of hell, it seems inevitable that the lines will break… but for the fact Punishment Battalion 333 is also there. Beaten, broken, bloodied and battered, these traitors, reactionaries, pimps, murderers, whoremasters, black marketeers, perverts and fifth columnists are the last line of defence.
Once more it is the worst scum in the whole of Russia, her hated heroes, the Gulag Rats who must endeavour to save her, except this time the enemy is their own kind. Even the devil himself won’t be able to save them…'
