What to do when a device dies?

I can't seem to find any general troubleshooting directions. I bought an Icarus Illumina E653 earlier this month and it has stopped working. It doesn't turn on, even after recharging, resetting, etc. It doesn't show up as a disk on my computer. Any tips? It is under warranty, but the manufacturer's support site is buggy, and they expect me to pay shipping costs of more than half the price of the e-reader itself, and I don't know about repair costs. It is common for warranty items that the user pay to ship it back and they pay to ship you a new one or repaired one. There is no repair costs if it is under warranty. Dale |

Okay, that still leaves the problem that their support site is buggy, so I can't get the required rma.

I got the rma, I shipped it, they refused it because I hadn't known about a e45 customs fee on broken electronics. I would have to pay more to get it shipped for repairs than to getg a new one.

I don't know whether to try my luck with another of the same device, or to try to find another device. Maybe this one had a defective battery, or something, and another one won't. Unfortunately, most devices don't fit my accessibility needs.

Back in the early days of Flash memory, probably late 1980's or early 1990's I bought a couple of PCMCIA cards from Germany because they were of a size that wasn't available yet in the USA. I don't remember the details of this. There might have been other differences as well. Anyway one of the cards was defective and the company rep was perfectly willing to work with me on this but with fees taxes and postage, etc. I finally decided it wasn't worth it. Keep in mind this was about a $600 card, so the fees and shipping were significant. Again, I don't recall the details. Anyway after that I've avoided buying from foreign sources with tax complications except for cheap items where I didn't really care if I lost now and then. Some of these Android e-ink devices look pretty tempting to me but it's remembering that experience that keeps me from trying one. It's worth saying that I think the company I bought that card from wanted to make it good. They were has stuck with this situation as I was. Barry |
