Good advice…especially when a story can kill you.

There was a fun 'Librarians' episode with the same basic idea.

I've enjoyed the Robin Hobb books that I've read. Although they tend to be more character driven than fantasy driven, IMO.

X-link to the DRM-free megathread:

Humble Audiobook Bundle Star Wars will be available for the next 2 weeks and contains readings of the tie-in novels, as well as the radio drama adaptations starring Mark Hamill himself.

Also, StoryBundle's Women in Science Fiction Bundle, which is ending soon, has added a freebie issue of Lightspeed magazine in addition to their mp3 song bonus for newsletter subscribers (no purchase necessary).

Also currently $1.99 at Amazon US: The Martian by Andy Weir and The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley

The Martian by Andy Weir
http://www.amazon.com/Martian-Novel-.../dp/B00EMXBDMA

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The Mirror Empire: Worldbreaker Saga 1 by Kameron Hurley

http://www.amazon.com/Mirror-Empire-.../dp/B00IQQUYVK
A stunning new epic fantasy from two-time Hugo Award winner Kameron Hurley.

On the eve of a recurring catastrophic event known to extinguish nations and reshape continents, a troubled orphan evades death and slavery to uncover her own bloody past... while a world goes to war with itself.

In the frozen kingdom of Saiduan, invaders from another realm are decimating whole cities, leaving behind nothing but ash and ruin. At the heart of this war lie the pacifistic Dhai people, once enslaved by the Saiduan and now courted by their former masters to provide aid against the encroaching enemy.

Stretching from desolate tundra to steamy, semi-tropical climes seething with sentient plant life, this is an epic tale of blood mages and mercenaries, emperors and priestly assassins who must unite to save a world on the brink of ruin.

As the dark star of the cataclysm rises, an illegitimate ruler is tasked with holding together a country fractured by civil war; a precocious young fighter is asked to betray his family to save his skin; and a half-Dhai general must choose between the eradication of her father's people or loyalty to her alien Empress.

Through tense alliances and devastating betrayal, the Dhai and their allies attempt to hold against a seemingly unstoppable force as enemy nations prepare for a coming together of worlds as old as the universe itself.

In the end, one world will rise - and many will perish.

I love Robin Hobb (my favorite author). Very character-driven books.

Bought Soldier Son trilogy even though I have the hardcovers (I buy Hobb in HC). I'll give her a tip

I'd start with Assassin's Apprentice for Hobb which is also $1.99 right now.

Most agree the original Farseer trilogy is her best work. Although I'm REALLY enjoying the new trilogy.

Amazon UK: The first three novels in the "Gentleman Bastard" series by Scott Lynch are just £1.99 at the moment.

The Lies of Locke Lamora
Red Seas under Red Skies
The Republic of Thieves

(And they're £1.99/£2.99/£2.99 at Kobo UK too.)

[Edit: And I find I hadn't bought the third one! I said in October 2013 that I'd wait for the price to drop. And it has. Now bought.]

Thanks - I've been waiting for an offer on this series.

Probably on offer because the fourth book in the series is now available for pre-order.

Thanks! I got The Lies of Locke Lamora which is $2.99 at Amazon US. The others are not discounted as far as I can tell. I've noticed that I don't always get the full discount, probably because of my location.
