I finally bit the bullet and purchased by DPT-S1 from Sony itself using my Amex card (extra year of warranty). I've had it for one and a half weeks and its been pretty great! For my use case, the full size PDF and the pen capabilities are perfect. I mostly read medical text books and write notes and the active reading is really beneficial. I came from using a Surface Pro 3 and I think this is miles ahead. Never having to worry about battery life or being able to see the screen in sunlight is a lifesaver. Also the pen input while not being as versatile (pressure sensitivity, colors, precision) is sufficient for notes and annotating. The PDF reader on the Sony is also pretty robust in the sense that it doesn't crash with large PDFs and is quick enough to "flip" through when scanning a book. The 9 sheet/page view really helps with this. One addition I would like is is an ebook reader app. Using Calibre to convert works for now, but having a stand alone app would be nice for organizing my casual reading. I wish Sony would open up the software so we could add apps like Koreader.

seems sony expects the tips to worn out eventually after a certain amount of use. i got mine a few months ago, and also ordered an extra stylus plus additional tips. on the site, the accessories are still available. but i believe sale is restricted to the u.s. (at least from the u.s. link).

I have been writing daily for 1.5 weeks and I do see that the tip has worn down. It must be a balance between scratching the plastic screen vs longevity of the nib vs writing feel. Thus far I haven't noticed any permanent writing scratches from the nib and IMO it feels better than the surface pro 3 (even with a matte screen protector).

After popping up the question, I looked through the manual, which clearly states that the tips are wearable: "The effectiveness of the supplied tip differs from that of the attached tip. Sony recommends replacing the tip when it becomes shorter than 1.5 mm (1/16 inch)."

So, those that use the pen frequently will definitely need to buy some spare parts.

They don't like European buyers?
@digiflash you can't buy from Sony directly. They only ship to US customers. Try shopereaders.com. But be prepared to wait. They order them on request. It takes a while. I'm still waiting for mine. Ordered 2 weeks ago. I suspect it's stuck in customs.

Question

Does anyone here from the US fancy ordering me a spare stylus and spare nibs? I'll PayPal the money plus shipping to UK and a fee for the trouble.

I backup PhilThompson's request. I am also interested in buying them, with delivery in Romania. Many thanks in advance!

I wouldn't mind ordering you some nibs. I was planning on doing it for myself so we would save a bit on shipping.

Shopreaders.com costs too much. There I can buy 1 device and pay 2 devices. Never ever Then I will wait if CAD Reader is capable to do what I want.

I too would like to stock up on a few additional nibs. If anyone can put some up on ebay for sale to Germany I'll be a buyer.

Hello! Interested also by the nibs (France), nevertheless, I bought some Wacom nibs (ACK-20003) that could fit with little cutting. I tested it and it works, even if it doesn't feel as comfortable as the original nibs.

I'm slightly worried that the nibs by Sony have been tested against the device to not leave marks on the screen but rather wear of. Given that Wacom (and others) use different kinds of coating for the surface their nibs might be less fit.

Wow! What a response! I've sent shopereaders.com a message asking if I can order nibs from them. If they do I'll bulk order a load and we can sort out payment via PayPal to ship them out to y'all.

Oh my reader has finally turned up today (or rather I had to go pay the customs charge and collect it) and I love it!
