Install Kindle for PC and send the offending books to that instead. They'll be delivered as Mobi or AWZ3 and you can then copy them to Calibre.

Sorry, I don't buy books very often. But today's the lucky day. The DRM changes in Kobo Desktop 3.17 are very minor, I gave to OBOK devs the needed info, so expect them to release fix in near future.

I don't know about K4PC, but the KPW1 defaults to Caecilia, without being able to display anything else, if the main body text has a "font-family" property that is not supported by the Kindle.

As soon as you remove the "font-family" style, font selection works again.

Am I correct in assuming that if we see the phrase "Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled" on the Amazon website that the book is in the new .kfx format?

If you download such a book directly on a device with firmware that supports enhanced typesetting, yes. If you download it on a different device or app, or you use the "transfer via USB" capability, you'll get it as Mobi/KF8.

They've already updated it to 5.6.1.1 which is something we never expected -- an old device bumped up to the 5.6.x line.

Thanks. Yes, 5.6.1.1 is the current version on my first generation Paperwhite, although it functions so flawlessly I have a hard time thinking of it as an "old" device. And Bookerly font isn't reason enough to upgrade; at least not until the DRM has been cracked.

Hey -- my Kindle Touch functions flawlessly too. Is it an old device?

Amen to waiting for the new format to be decoded... but you may not get a choice. If they make an update, it will automatically be installed over WiFi.

That sounds more like a bug than a deliberate policy.

Wow. Completely missed that. I'm still on 5.4.x I see. I wonder what changed.

Could be a bug of course, but I encountered this behavior in quite a number of books, and fixed it by just removing "font-family". I normally read in Palatino, and as soon as I see Caecilia when I open a book, I know a hacking session is afoot. (OK nowadays, it's a 1 second fix, Calibre having an editor and all )

Ow darn... so if you have a newer version of Kindle4PC, which supports that new KFX-version, it could be that you are going to get a non-crackable book, just as with ADE 3 or 4?

It could (would?) also mean that Calibre cannot convert that format into EPUB, and KindleUnpack cannot extract an EPUB? Even when buying from Amazon, I don't keep their AZW3 format. I either extract the EPUB using KindleUnpack (which mostly works), or convert to EPUB (if KU's result is not good), then fix that, and convert to AZW3, keeping the EPUB as well.

This is not funny, having to stick with ADE 2.01, hoping that it will be supported forever (it won't), and now also having to keep track of what Amazon is doing, to be able to undrm and convert the books.

Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to get 750 ebooks as soon as possible, including those Delphi classics.

BTW, I don't have problems with my KPW1 either. It works perfectly, except for the Time To Read; sometimes it just cuts in half for no apparent reason. It is always spot on (checked it a few times), and then, suddenly, the time is EXACTLY half of what it should be.
