Personally if my Surface is on a table with the keyboard attached I use a mouse, if it's on my lap without a keyboard I use the pen and my finger. Going forward when I buy my next laptop (no the Surface is not a full replacement) I won't be bothered about whether it's a touchscreen or not as I won't be using my finger on a screen that's vertically in front of me, I'll use a mouse. And that i think is the issue, most people won't find a touchscreen natural if the device is vertically in front of them, if it's on their lap that's a different story.

Heck, maybe I should. I could probably find a study that says people have no trouble or complaints about going from keyboard to touchscreen.
I have to give you credit. You make me want to grab a keyboard.
If Google is so easy, why don't you just link to your findings?
Why should I bother to do your research for you? We have this wonderful thing called Google. When you see a post where you don't want to believe what the poster says, and combatively say "where is your proof? Show me links", then you are calling that poster a liar. Why should I go out of my way for someone who is calling me a liar? I reported something that I read about why touch screen laptops were not popular. I also reported that Apple as well as many other companies spend lots of money on UI labs. You don't believe that? Ok, I'll turn it back on you. Where is _your_ proof? Show me links (valid links, not just some joker with a blog mouthing off) that say Apple doesn't spend lots of money researching UI.

All he asked for was a link the the study you mentioned, seems fair enough, if it was something you read a while back and don't remember where, also, fair enough, just say that.

BTW, you can't prove a negative, that's like me asking you to prove that Denmark doesn't have a space station orbiting Jupiter, provide links.

You really think that all testing and research on UI's stopped when iPads came out? I can't imagine why you would think so. UI testing and research is wide spread and not just limited to the computer world. It's a whole field of study.
Actually, I never asked for links.

All I wanted to know is what the criteria in the UI tests were? I have an interest in UI design and usability, and was genuinely interested in the criteria of the test mentioned.

You immediately turned this into an attack on me, effectively claiming that I was trying to start a flame war.

You have since managed to turn this simple request for a clarification into an attack on pretty much anyone who disagrees with you.

And while I will agree that Google is a wonderful resource, it suffers from a tendency to return too many inappropriate links for general queries, of which any UI query is one.

Here is a link to the abstract of one study on the effects of touchscreens so that the argument may be resumed on a more informed basis.

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/1...39.2011.592604
Conclusion: using touch screens with desktop PCs leads to shoulder strain.

BTW the search did involve term refinement and link following, so I wouldn't call it straightforward.

I can well believe that's true. If I raise my arm from my keyboard to touch my desktop monitor, it certainly feels awkward. Completely different to using a tablet touchscreen.

I wouldn't consider using a touchscreen with a desktop, however it's now one of my "must have" on a laptop

Agreed, on a laptop it is useful. I find the touchscreen particularly useful on my Surface Pro for scrolling in the web browser.

Totally different ergonomic environments, no?

Btw, tablets aren't the only category stalling in the market.
Desktop PCs are also stalled:

http://www.cnet.com/news/computer-ta...st-gets-worse/

Quote:

PC shipments are expected to tumble 8.7 percent this year, and won't stabilize until 2017. Tablets, meanwhile, will see an 8 percent decline in shipments.

The sobering forecast underscores a broader problem in the industry: an overall lack of excitement and enthusiasm in either the tablet or PC markets. Consumers are hanging onto their old PCs and tablets longer -- and why not? There have been few innovations in the tablet business to drive a new purchase, and the 3-year-old Window 8 software for laptops and desktops was never much of a lure. Microsoft's decision to offer free upgrades to its new Windows 10 software, which debuted in late July, meant most consumers didn't need a new device to take advantage of its latest bells and whistles.

Desktop sales have been in free fall for a long time. I work for an extremely large company and they've bought nothing but laptops for years now, and I imagine most home users buy a laptop in preference to a desktop, too. There are people who still buy desktops, such as hardcore gamers, but it's very much a minority market.

Or those that think a laptop won't do everything a desktop does because they don't research but believe something they heard years ago from a computer manufacturer.
