I bought a touchscreen monitor for my desktop after Windows 8 came out and hardly ever use the touchscreen. I bought a keyboard for my iPad and use that even less. Some ways of doing things just seem more natural to some devices than they do to others.

I also have a large screen desktop that is touch screen and I never use the touch screen. But I use touch screen all the time for my Nexus tablet and even with having a Bluetooth keybrd and never use it with the Nexus. With me it is what is convenient at the time. Or I guess really it is what makes sense to use at the time.

Just like, for example, an iPad, fingerprints on the screen only show up when the device is turned off. When it's on, they're completely invisible. The screen may look a real mess when you turn the machine off, but you just don't see the fingerprints when you're using it.

But I bet that drives "clean" freaks nutzoid !

Junk on screens when turned off and the angle of light is right is a never ending battle to remove for those that want or need their device screens to be squeaky clean at all light reflecting angles!

I surrendered a long time ago !

That's only if the brightness is fairly high. Right now sitting out back in the shade I have my brightness at 18%. I use an anti glare screen protector so I don't get a lot of fingerprints, but I still need to clean it at least once a day.

On a serious note, I think whether or not I use a touch screen depends on how close the screen is. On a ten or twelve inch tablet/laptop the screen is within a couple of inches of the keyboard so I only need to move my hand a little to interact with the screen. Even on my wife’s 15 inch touchscreen laptop I alternate between using the track pad and poking the screen.

But on my large screen desktop the monitors are all the way across the desk, ten or twenty inches from the keyboard. I literally have to change positions in my chair to reach it, the mouse is much closer so I rarely find myself poking the screen expecting it to interact.

It depends on how bright you have the display setting, & how/what you use the tablet.

I have an ASUS memopad 176cx which I use as a universal controller for my AV system via software. Especially when watching TV, I keep changing channels &/or hitting the mute icon to silence the loud commercials; also do channel surfing. Many channel changes when eating & sandwiches do leave imprints on the screen that are very visible when the display is on & VERY visible when the screen goes into "save screen" mode which happens often.

I do have the "screen save" sleep mode set at 10 min BUT the bug is that it is ignored & within 1 min the screen goes black with the date & time display.

The "good news" is that it is easy to find the mute button when the screen is darkened.

Might even be a preview of a new keyboard cover option for the Surface line.

You made a wide and sweeping statement on a relatively new aspect of technology, and I was simply asking for some clarification on the parameters of these tests you base such a wide and sweeping characterisation on.

At first you don't answer the question. I've found that when the reply is 'do your own research into my statement', the poster is generally talking through their hat.

Then, these tests turn out to be an article when the iPad first came out. This means that any UI tests given would be given to people who had never really used a touch interface before on a large non-phone device. And yes, switching between the two can be confusing, until you get enough experience to know when to use which interface.

We also don't know what the test setup was. Was this between a tablet and a computer? A tablet with on-screen keyboard vs attached keyboard? A computer with both touch and keyboard? Each is a different universe of actions required to perform the tasks necessary to control the device.

Any UI test done during the pre-iPad era is going to completely superseded by this time, as the general populace is much more acquainted with touch screens to control actual computers (as opposed to phones), and would probably be much more able and willing to switch between the two.

When you have a history of being combative and picking fights, then you really shouldn't expect me to keep trying to kick the football. Generally when I see someone demand someone else provide links, I'm pretty sure they are only looking to argue rather than seriously interested in the subject. Google is very easy to use, you know.

You really think that all testing and research on UI's stopped when iPads came out? I can't imagine why you would think so. UI testing and research is wide spread and not just limited to the computer world. It's a whole field of study.

@pwalker8 -- now you are making me embarrassed to be on the same side as you.

Clarification: I certainly know what I prefer, and I like to think the whole world agrees with me I have no actual proof they do.

When I see someone state facts, I expect that person to be able to back it up.
My name isn't Lucy and you are not Charlie Brown.
We don't want to argue but why should we take the time to verify your facts for you.
Heck, maybe I should. I could probably find a study that says people have no trouble or complaints about going from keyboard to touchscreen.
I have to give you credit. You make me want to grab a keyboard.
If Google is so easy, why don't you just link to your findings?
