I think you'll find YMWV with each firmware depending on your particular use. For myself, I'm staying with 3.17.0. I do not use kepubs though and I never had a problem with sickel no matter which books or pdfs I tried. 3.17.0 had a bit faster page turns on epubs. I don't see any ghosting of the cover image after waking it from sleep (although I wouldn't necessarily find that to be a problem since I keep my page refresh set to 50, if I needed to force a refresh, it's easy enough to do).

I just didn't see any improvement in 3.17.3 in my case at all to bother with setting up my patch file again.

These are the changes I can remember:

3.15.0: Fixed the last remaining bug in EPUB hyphenation; Added a refresh when closing menus in a book, which allows a quick manual refresh by tapping the screen twice; Added a new bug causing heavy ghosting in menus and popus which (I think) only affects older Pearl screen devices, but which can be partially fixed by adding a LeanAndMean=false feature setting to the configuration file.

3.16.0: Fixed some of the bugs in KEPUB hyphenation, some still remain; Fixed a bug affecting EPUB line spacing in some books; Added a new KEPUB bug that causes some PNG images to display as solid black rectangles. Removed the LeanAndMean option so it is no longer possible to partially fix the menu and popup ghosting problems on older Pearl screen devices.

3.16.10: (only for Japanese GloHD, I didn't install this version on my Glo) Fixed the PNG bug from 3.16.0; Added sickel, which causes the device to reboot unnecessarily in some situations.

3.17.0: Fixed the ghosts from the library and homescreen tiles by adding a screen refresh when opening a book; Added new bugs that cause the KEPUB reader to forget the exact book location when the device is powered off, and one that causes the wrong progress to show on the sleep screen;

3.17.3; Fixed the KEPUB forgetting book location bug from 3.17.0; Deactivated sickel to fix the problem of unnecessary reboots that started in 3.16.10; Removed the screen refresh when opening a book, undoing the fix from 3.17.0;

Whether it is worth upgrading past 3.13.1 depends on which features you use I guess. I felt it was worth upgrading to 3.16.0 for the KEPUB hyphenation bug fixes, beyond that it is a mixed bag.

Thank you for this very useful info. I'll take the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach. That leaves my Kobo Aura at firmware 3.8.0, my Aura HD is at 3.15 (with the games still as a beta features menu option!), and both the Glo HD's stay at 3.16.0

A lot of stuff to do with something called "Kobo Love Points" has been added in firmare 3.17.0, and since 3.16.0 there has been a configuration file entry kobo_love_enabled=false which appears after a sync.

I don't have any inside knowledge about Kobo Love Points (I gather some others do but are not allowed to talk about it?) but I guess it is some new loyalty/bonus/discount scheme, and at some time in the future it will be activated. Then maybe you will need to be running a recent firmware like 3.17.0 or later if you want to take part. Just my speculation, I know nothing.

Maybe strange.. but with sideloaded kepubs 3.17.0 I still have the ghosting from the cover when waking up, it is not terrible, but it is there.
I must say the book I am currently reading is pitch black, but the ghosting only dissapears when I tap in the middle,and tap again forcing a refresh... so if it really did a refresh when waking up, wy does it needed a second ?
Or.. if by anyone else, why doesn't it doing it at my 2 Glo HD's ??

If you are referring to the new refresh when opening a book in 3.17.0, the only new part is that it refreshes when opening the book, i.e. when tapping a homescreen tile or library item, not when waking from sleep with the book already open. I haven't seen any change to the refresh after waking from sleep.

It might be different on other devices or if using a sleep cover, but on my Glo whith no sleep cover I don't see any ghost of the sleep screen when waking from sleep, but the text is very light until I turn the page when it darkens up to normal even if there is no refresh. That has happened for quite a while now, since before 3.15.0 I think.

I cannot speak for 3.17.3 as I have not had a change to install it. But I have installed 3.17.0 and 3.17.0 with the sickel reboot removal patch works better than 3.15.0. Page turns in ePuib are faster and highlighting works better. Plus, no ghosting when using the dictionary or opening an ePub.

OK then it was me who understood the opening of a book wrong, I am sorry, I understood that it would refresh from opening while it was asleep, feeling quite stupid now, I was double checking if the devices are on 3.17.0 and if they were kepubs, and am now with my camera in bed trying to take a picture of the ghosting..

sorry again. I understood opening as in opening the sleepcover.

Installed and patched 3.17.3. Decided to download a book from Kobo but it will not download to my H20. Says "pending." When I try to sign out of my Kobo account and sign back in, H20 reboots, and while it doesn't lose any books on my device, it doesn't remember my last position and the books I was currently reading. On the 3.17.0 update, the content of my shelves got wiped out. Seems like something is up w/ the sync. Gonna check the date/time to make sure H20 has it right, but as of now I cannot download books from Kobo.

I agree, I'm on 3.15.0 after updating from 3.12.0. I miss the rating feature (stars) in the book library for regular epubs.
I use(d) this feature to rate books as a reminder to myself and use it as a criteria (among others) for future purchases. I know Kobo didn't do anything with the ratings of regular epubs.
Personally, I see no reason to update to the latest available firmware version.

One of the firmware updates made the text a darker color. I don't recall which firmware version did it though, but I think it was after 3.12.0. I'm sure someone will correct me which firmware it was, but it was such a dramatic difference that I finally updated my old Glos from 2.4.0 that I stayed on for years for various reasons. Whatever version that was, it was well worth updating to.

A book in "pending" status should download during the next sync. Did anything get downloaded during the sync?

Which is exactly what is expected when you sign out of the Kobo account on the device

I can only say it is working here. The reading positions are syncing correctly. The shelves seem to be, but I haven't change them much lately for books from Kobo recently, so maybe I haven't noticed.

Checking the date and time is good idea. But, what happens when you try to download a book? If it is just one or two books, try deleting it from the library on the Kobo web-site. This will put it in the trash on the site and the next sync will remove the details of the book from the device. Then, you restore the book from the trash and the next sync should download it. Doing this has fixed a couple of books that had gotten into a weird state.
