"Require" is the key word.
We have similar laws in the US. There's nothing stopping them from ASKING you to work ridiculous hours, and there's nothing stopping you from AGREEING to work ridiculous hours. There are, however limits to how long they can "require" you to work. Require: as in, "work this long or you're fired."

In IT it's quite often "required" that you work ridiculous hours. Most people have done something that can technically get you fired if they want to. For instance, most people I worked with didn't completely follow the dress code and that is part of what you agree to. If they want to fire you for not working enough hours, they'll find something else to fire you for.

Residents can't work more than 80 hours - 2003 law mentioned here in an article about worklife. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/i...-from-burnout/

And what about the 2011 revision (I just did a quick Google, so I have no idead what I'm talking about, and I don't really care )?

My question was (in regards to the post about the DOT) aren't there more retrictions than just those imposed on truck drivers?

I punched a clock and rarely worked overtime. Most of the time I refused to do so and went home. After I left work, I never answered phone calls from them.

On the other hand... After I left Intel, I spent 8 years as a cook in a little owner operated pizza joint. Sometimes shit happens and I needed to stay over or come in early. Restaurant needs to stay open and serving if i want a continuing paycheck, so many 40+ to 50 hour weeks. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

That to me is not the same.
In the other circumstance, the doors wouldn't close if someone refused overtime.

In your case, the doors might close if you didn't show up. That could hurt the business.
You going in was very relevant to the company staying in business.

But neither is it grounds to go from a total lack of knowledge, to suddenly assuming the worst of people/organizations based only on their say-so!

Exceptions
You may have to work more than 48 hours a week on average if you work in a job:

where 24-hour staffing is required
in the armed forces, emergency services or police
in security and surveillance
as a domestic servant in a private household
as a seafarer, sea-fisherman or worker on vessels on inland waterways
where working time is not measured and you’re in control, eg you’re a managing executive with control over your decisions

That 24 hour staffing rule is used a lot in the hotel industry to get around the 48hr average week.
