Hello all,
My name is Jerry Kurtis and I found this forum because I am an avid reader, about 30 novels a year plus magazines and other forms of printed literature. My book shelves are abut as full as they can get and the e readers look like a good alternative. I live in Lima Peru and have no immediate plans to go back to the US. I can have friends and family that visit bring me an e reader if it is a viable way to go. I have researched the new Sony PRS 700 and it looks interesting. The Amazon Kindle does not look like it will work for me unless I am in US to download the titles I want. Will the e reader work for me by downloading to my computer and then to the reader??? I would enjoy hearing for you all as to your thoughts and ideas. The forum looks great Thank you and look forward to hearing form you. Jerry: |

Welcome Jerry, and good luck with your search.
Please understand, that if you have a U.S. based credit card with a U.S. address, on your amazon account, you can still use the Kindle. You would simply download to your computer, then transfer to your Kindle using the USB cord included. Otherwise, you may want something else. Not pushing anything here, just want to be clear. |

Hello Jerry and welcome to MobileRead. You might get in touch with Dr. Drib, one of the forum regulars who also lives in Lima.
As desertgrandma said, you don't have to live in the USA to own and use a Kindle. The only requirement is that you must have a credit card with a billing address in the USA. Some people outside the US have gotten a pre-paid credit card and a US mail drop address. Once you have the credit card on file with Amazon, you can then use gift certificates to fund your purchases of eBooks. Download to your PC (or Mac) and then push to the Kindle through the USB connection. You won't be able to get the book samples, since they only deliver through the built-in wireless. And, I'm not sure if you can get newspaper or blog subscriptions, but those wouldn't be available for a Sony or Cybook or any other brand of reader, either. Welcome to MobileRead. Please join in the discussions here -- we're a community of people who like to read, so even if you don't have a reader yet, there's plenty of thngs to talk about. |

Hi All,
WOW!!!!!what a great forum. Thank you all for your advice. I would like to know if there is advice for suing Kindle or the new Sony 700. Aside from the smaller amount of books being offered at Sony is one equipment better or worse. Jerry Kurtis |

Hi Jerry,
I think it depends on what your personal preferences are! I love my Sony (the older 505), but others love their different devices. As for book availability, don't be put off by what's available at the Sony store - there are other places, such as Fictionwise.com and BooksonBoard.com where you can buy ebooks. |
