What would happen if, being elderly, they peed in an electric heated bed? I agree with Catlady and would be concerned in case the cats received a shock.
The microwaved rice sounds a better alternative if you don't have a thermostat for your radiators. All my radiators (gas) are controlled by a central thermostat for the house temperature plus a knob on each radiator which controls that radiators heat. This means I can have a low setting in the kitchen, warmer in the lounge, medium in the bathroom, and just an anti-frost setting in the room where I feed the cats and their litter is. There are about 6 options for each radiator. My previous house wasn't centrally heated, there were gas fires in each room. The kitchen and bathroom were freezing in winter! One reason why the cats love the new house. Apart from hanging cat beds from, they're also useful for drying washing. Back to chairs.... |

I am about to move into a new townhouse and wanted to revive this thread. I have bad knees and arthritis in my hips. I would love to know if anyone has suggestions for reading chairs/other selected furniture. Staying awake is not an issue for me, but comfort and decent support is. Anyone have thoughts?

If space and fashion are not a big consideration, a daybed with many cushions and a big reading pillow with arms gives one a lot of positions. Surely one will be comfortable.
You can dress it up with different quilts and bedspreads. |

I have really bad knees and the absolute best, most comfortable chair I've ever spent any time in was a knock-off of an Eames lounger with the associated ottoman. A genuine Eames will set you back more than $4000 these days, I believe, but a very good chair in the same style will run less (perhaps significantly less) than $1000.

I recently got this oversized chair with its ottoman and it's very comfortable. Nice and soft and supportive too.

I am 67 and for me any chair that I can find in a quiet place if great with me. But really I have a recliner that I love to read in, the only problem is that it is so comfortable that I catch myself falling a sleep in it while reading at times.

Hi. I am retiring at the end of Sept, and i have similar problems. After trying several chairs i have ordered a small recliner rocker from Lazyboy called 'impulse'. It's very firm, with lots of positions. Because it's a rocker, i can also push back without reclining, so there are several options to shift around and get comfortable.
I don't care for leather so am having it covered in a nice fabric. It's quite narrow so good for small spaces. I hope you find a comfortable reading chair! |
