My monitor looks fine in Device Manager.

I'm struggling to work out from the Event Viewer which are the relevant events before the crash. It could be (under the Error section):

Just a thought... Have you tried running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt? If not, give that a try and see if it finds and fixes any errors

We're on to something here. This thread on the Nvidia forums shows you're certainly not the only one getting that error in conjunction with black screens. No apparent solution yet, but since it's widely reported, hopefully a fix via drivers is imminent.

This has to do with Office. Try uninstalling the "Get Office" app that came with Win 10. Just find it in start, right click and uninstall and hopefully that error will go away. Not a huge deal either way but I like to clear up little problems like that.

You know you are absolutely right! The latest video driver (355.60) is back, even though I rolled back to 353.62 a couple of hours ago. Now off to hide updates...

You know, when it comes to regular Windows updates, I don't even care much. But MS should NOT have that much faith in either AMD or nvidia. I suspect we'll be seeing changes in that particular functionality. After all, they did publish that troubleshooter I linked that lets you hide updates. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see driver updates separated out in a future update to the OS.

I ran it and it said it found some corrupt files and repaired them, so thanks for the tip. Actually haven't had a black screen event for a couple of hours...

Every day I get an MS nagware message on my screen as soon as I boot up, telling me now is the time to reserve my free W10 update.
Except:
(a) I don't want to reserve it; and
(b) I can't work out how to turn off the nagware message (there is no obvious option in the nagware ad to turn the *!!* thing off). As far as I am concerned, it's spam.

No doubt I'll get around to W10 in a year or so's time, when all the major bugs and hassles have been fixed, but it looks like I'll have to put up with a whole year being nagged incessantly by MS.
