Windows 10 - free upgrade to those with PC using Windows 7 or 8

I have Office 10 on my Office computer. There was a red Get Office 365 App pinned to my start menu. I have not gotten any requests to upgrade. I just removed the app from my start menu and uninstalled it.

I felt the same way, until I did the math replacing software vs renting it over a three year period. I generally don't replace sw every three years, but, the cost of Office is mind-numbing when you finally decide to do it.

Renting 365 Personal was $69.99+tax/year vs. $400 for the same bundle (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). So over a 6 year period, it's cheaper to rent, have it automatically updated and supported, than to buy.

I think you are right for Personal, but I would prefer to have it on all of my machines, desktop, laptop, tablet and phone if possible and that's a bit more expensive...not a lot mind you, but....

where I'm coming from is with Office 2010 that I got through the Corporate Employee purchase for $10 and I've been using it for about 5 years now...

I guess bottom line is it's really only Word (and maybe Excel) that I need and only because of compatibility, but may try to keep limping along on one copy of Word 2010 on my desktop til my books hit the bestseller lists or I win the lotto.

The version I have allows me to install Office on five machines (Family Pack?), so at $400 apiece [figger figger] that's two grand! Hmm... seems like $99 a year would take 20 years to pay off. I should hope to live so long.

Yep, that's likely the way I will go if push comes to shove....

Aaaaaaand, it happened again. It makes a nice little noise, like the new mail notification, then goes dark on me. I'm pretty sure it's to do with Windows Updates. I hadn't had the PC on over the weekend, as I've been away, and after startup it was slow as a dog (presumably running updates), and then after a few minutes went black on me.

Does anyone else's machine play a notification sound after the Windows Update?

I do get a notification in, strangely enough, the notification panel after updates have installed so there might well be a sound with it, but I haven't really paid attention

to you too . Yes I get it there, but because my PC goes dark, I can't see if there is a notification at the time of the crash.

Notification sounds are (loosely) tied to themes. Changing themes, may change sounds.

I just updated my Geforce 210 driver, a bit snappier (from what W10m upgrade supplied).
Now we will see if the stability suffers

After looking into the Windows Default sound theme, the sound for a rather generic "system notification", which I guess is where updates would fall under, is somehow similar(ish) to the new mail sound. Maybe change the system notification sound to something more distinctive and see if that's what you hear the next time the screen goes dark on you
