With Firmware 3.17+disable sickel patch: Open PDF: 32-33 seconds. Turn Page : 19 seconds. The AES 256bit pdf issue remains unchanged. They cannot be opened and Kobo gives a wrong error message. Last edited by arspr; 08-13-2015 at 07:47 AM. |

But I wouldn't rule out issues. The problem is not because *wrong/defective* hacking of the device. The problem is that common operations within the device (as rendering thumbnail images for the Library preview) are slow, and they are slower than the auto-reboot-because-it-seems-hang threshold they have installed. I've just installed 3.17. (and I've just patched it), but I really fear that highlighting in epubs (which is by bar, much more slower than in kepubs) could trigger it... |

Just tested with a few different epubs and no problem at all. Nor any problems with any kepubs or pdf's on my system.

(I originally found the AES 256 bit trouble on a real pdf, a brochure from Canon on its "not so new any more" 7D Mark II DSLR camera. IIRC the link should be somewhere in this thread. But my simple pdf test file should be enough). Last edited by arspr; 08-13-2015 at 07:56 AM. |

You've probably identified a bug, but to be honest its not one that affects me. Report it to Kobo. I dont read many PDF's, and if one crashes my Kobo I load it on my mac, run it through the print to PDF and it works.
Sounds like a few people have seen it so its worth reporting, but its a pretty specific one. I havent come across any 256 bit encrypted ones, and to be honest I've never found a ereader thats pleasurable to read PDF's on. SHould I need to read one, I slap it on my iPad Mini ;-) Last edited by Desdinova; 08-13-2015 at 07:56 AM. |

I just thought I'd mention that on the ePub's I have on my system, highlighting etc seems to work fine without rebooting so I think your issue is purely a problem with the PDF reader.
Personally, I'd happily wipe out the PDF format ;-) |

And interesingly enough, I'm unable to read that Canon PDF in Safari on the ipad and open in iBooks fails..
Trying your four PDF's - I can open the first three on the iPad fine, the fourth doesnt work.. Which would tend to suggest something is screwy with the whole 256bit business full stop |

They work in Google Chrome on the PC, but Chrome on the iPad fails identically to Safari.
I wonder if this is something thats marginal in the whole PDF format. This is weird |

Perhaps not so offtopic. As I said, Kobo aren't the only people choking on these PDF's, so this may be something thats marginal in the format. There's been form in the past for formats to work optimally with the company that produced them...
So this looks more and more like a problem with Kobo's, but not necessarily a Kobo problem - if you get what I mean... Because on my PC here, I have Adobe Acrobat installed so I'm probably using the Adobe PDF plugin ;-) |

As an aside, its this sort of thing thats left me with an irrational hatred of PDF's...
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/fo...?topic=47328.0 http://superuser.com/questions/16618...s-x-and-ubuntu http://apple2online.com/index.php?p=...ding-pdf-files It seems to be a known thing - they tend to only work with Adobe. Since 256bit was introduced with PDF/1.7 my guess is Kobo, like Apple and I would hazard a guess many others, don't support PDF/1.7. As this doesnt seem to be an isolated thing - my guess is licensing costs against supporting a handful of documents. My other guess is Kobo (and probably Apple etc) would answer 'Convert to an earlier PDF format' Last edited by Desdinova; 08-13-2015 at 08:38 AM. |
