I don't know if it has to do with Alf's tools but i have found that when I get books via sites like Storybundle that if I run them through calibre they sometimes shrink quite a bit in size with no problems showing up later as far as missing text, pics, etc. That's a good thing when you want to save space on an ereader or tablet.

From my testing so far it appears that the kfx files that provide enhanced typesetting are only delivered directly to a kindle (cannot be downloaded from amazon.com for USB sideloading), have a structure significantly different from any previous kindle format, and have DRM encryption even for supposedly DRM-free books.
ETA: You can still download a DRM-free AZW/AZW3 format book for sideloading, but then you lose out on the enhanced typesetting features. |

![]() Adobe can do it so nothing special has to be done. If the font used supports ligatures you get ligatures. As long as the language used has a hyphenation dictionary, you get hyphenation. If spaces need to be adjusted, they are. Why did Amazon have to go and create a new format for the enhanced typesetting? |

My optimistic side says that they came up with an easier to render format in order to increase performance and improve battery life. My pessimistic side says they came up with a more proprietary format to increase user lock-in.

I don't find it incredibly difficult to imagine that they took the opportunity to "improve" the format for possibly performance-related or toolchain reasons. Amazon are not really focused on ensuring backwards-compatibility, they probably can't even imagine why someone would use a non-Kindle.
![]() It's enough for them that other Kindles can read the format. Thing is, anyone who wants to escape the Kindle hardware ecosystem has ample options for doing so, since Amazon still hasn't obsoleted all the many old ways to do so. And anyone who is interested in doing so already knows that. So once again, Amazon may be doing things to lock down streamline the user experience, but they aren't trying very hard -- they are only performing a token gesture. Token gesture -- typical Amazon move, just about says it all. ![]() |

My H2O has very good battery life while giving me the typesetting features that do not need anything special done. There is no reason Amazon could not have done the same thing. It would have been a good thing if Amazon put in a stronger battery in the PW3. |

Yup. It is a new format.
http://the-digital-reader.com/2015/0...x-file-format/ It *has* been three years since KF8. Enhanced typographical cues may only be part of the new package. We'll see what they're up to soon enough. edit: a comment at the Digital Reader blog pointed out this freebie with the new format: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IMLL63O A pretty good read in its own right. ![]() Last edited by fjtorres; 08-11-2015 at 04:26 PM. |

Please note, it appears that with Kobo's latest desktop release they have changed their proprietory DRM. Therefore the latest Tools (or any version of the Tools containing 'obok') won't work.
Refer Alf's blog. EDIT Obok is not working if you upgrade to Kobo Desktop 3.17. Last edited by Lynx-lynx; 08-11-2015 at 05:58 PM. Reason: add the Edit |

Do we need the latest Kobo desktop? How can Kobo change the DRM such that it works on devices not running the latest firmware? if I didn't side load, my H2O would still be on 3.13.1.

It's just adds another format for ebookers to deal with. Hopefully, Calibre will soon be able to handle KFX.
