If someone does this they should be aware that the model and firmware of the registered Kindle will determine what flavor of book file (MOBI or AZW3) is downloaded from Amazon for installation via USB. You need to have a newer model Kindle if you want the newer AZW3 (KF8) format. Advanced formatting will be lost for some books if only MOBI format is used.

Also, I think that these days you need to register the device to your account via the Kindle interface, so it needs to work well enough to to accomplish that. A Kindle that won't power on or has a totally broken screen will prevent that. (A Kindle with a few lines on the screen due to a broken substrate would work.)

'Newer model' is Kindle 3/Kindle Keyboard or newer. K1 & K2 do not support KF8, and neither does the DX, which is essentially a K2 on steroids.

One more thing. There have been reports of needing to delete and re-download books after installing the latest Kindle firmware in order to enable advanced typesetting for those books. This may mean that there is yet another variant of book that will be delivered based on the Kindle's model and firmware version. Time will tell.

I have a vintage (nearly dead screen) K2 against just that eventuality.
I long ago extracted its PID but it's still registered.
It may only deliver mobi7 instead of KF8 files but I'm not a stickler for fancy formatting anyway.

Thing is, Amazon doesn't care that much about hardening their DRM.
They seem to mostly go through the motions to keep up appearances.

Detailed help on DRM removal isn't permitted on MobileRead. I suggest you find Apprentice Alf's blog (google will help) - that should give you all the info and tools you need.

True. That's one reason the link isn't even given here. It's assumed that the reader will know where to go to get the tools and MR doesn't want to take the risk of getting some trouble by posting even the link to where they can be found.

You can still call up Amazon Customer Service and they should be willing to register it. Just tel them you only have wired internet.
They probably won't even bother to ask why you don't do it over WiFi though.

Mobi7 can be an advantage. There is no support for any embedded spyware that may need to be cleaned up. And for a nicer look of presentation of mobi7 with custom linespacing, kerning, hinting, hyphenation, and such, there will probably be a filter to convert them the way you want them automatically. I don't trust each publisher to create nice and consistent great looking books only because the advanced typesetting becomes available. Quite the contrary - more choice to screw up will be taken advantage of.
