Troubleshooting Kindle can not access Wikipedia

I have Kindle DXG and up to recently I had no problem accessing Wikipedia pages via Wi-Fi. Starting last week however it would not open any Wikipedia links, including the one predefined in Bookmarks. When pressing on such a link the following message appears:"Basic web is unable to establish secure connection... please try again later". Trying again later produces the same result every time, but there is no such problem with other sites. What happened? Is there a way to fix it?

I'd suggest asking Kindle Customer Service.

sounds like it is an issue with the certificates that are needed to open the secure sites. More than likely Wikipedia has updated their certificates and they have not been updated on the kindle. Like HarryT says contact Kindle Customer service.

Did that. After switching between basic and desktop mode, and visiting various sites for a while, which all worked except for Wikipedia, they said that the only way left to proceed was factory reset. And even then no guarantees. Is that really the only way?

This failed due to various sites removing a security hole. The Kindle Keyboard was updated but I suspect older Kindles are out of luck.

Nope, same thing, first Security Certificate, then Basic Web is unable to make a secure connection. What's the "security hole"?

I ultimately saved my files and did the factory reset. It didn't make any difference with Wikipedia, but Amazon customer service finally transferred me to tech support, who eventually told me something like "kindle fork does not support new security settings, and there is no way to fix it, and there won't be in the future because DX is no longer sold". And then added that "DX was unique and there is no replacement for it, new kindles that have web access are small screened [so I can't read on them], and even tablets with large screens do not have web access".

Is there a hack that changes Kindle's "security settings"?

What model of DXG has Wifi in addition to 3G?
I always thought that the DX/DXG where 3G only devices.

I would imagine K2 (and K1 for that matter) have the same issue. I'll try that when I have a chance. The thing is, Wikipedia recently (like last month) switched to HTTPS to protect user security. Is that when it stopped working?

It will be interesting to see what Amazon will do about it. They probably had similar issues with Kindle Keyboard (with secured sites generally), which is why they had to update it. There are still a lot of those in use.

Can you still connect to Kindle Store? Surely that is HTTPS as well. Not sure it is related, but I had to re-register my K1 last month for some reason in order to recover Store access (I thought it was because I changed my password, but maybe it needed to update the security certificate?). Maybe re-registering would fix this, too.

They are 3G only. Probably meant 'wireless' in generic sense.

He didn't say "wireless", though; he said "Wifi". That's not a generic word. As has been said, no Kindle DX has Wifi.

I know he said wifi but I was attempting error correction in order to make sense of the question.

BTW I tried going to wikipedia with my K1 and it does not work. I'll check K2 tomorrow. I'm guessing that will not work either (basically same firmware as DX). Surely Amazon will let me trade it in for a Voyage? Can't believe I paid $359 for it.

The K2 and its large screen peers (DX/DXG) run the same 2.5.8 firmware build.

I still have the electronic, hand, calculator that I paid $359 for only a few decades ago.
A really advanced device of its time, four functions plus one (1) memory location.
(And it still works but manufacturers literally "don't build consumer devices to last, like they once did.)

As of 08/10/2015 - Fixed for K2, DX, DXG if running YifanLu's firmware (FrankenKindle).

I didn't do it, one of our dev. forum readers did and shared the "HowTo".
I.E: Any of the Series 2 devices can now rum the most recent Series 3 (3.4.2) firmware.
Which 'fixes' Amazon's Experimental Browser.

Note: Does not (at this time) include updating to Amazon's most recent e-book font -
but that might happen someday also.

Tablets do have web access, mostly through wifi. although some have 4G access. Don't know what they are referring to.
