Exactly. Granted, one tends to develop an (sometimes) unfortunate schizophrenic (in the classic sense of the word) sense of spelling, but overall, it results in a broader vocabulary and in my opinion a richer experience.
After writing my prior post, I went out to the referenced web site to see the differences for various books. One change I had to laugh at was UK: "pot plant" and US: "potted plant". In the US, "pot plant" would immediately be interpreted as marijuana. This was probably a good choice for a geographic edit.

Hahaha. Good call, that... there would have been ten times more outraged parents railing against the books.

Meanwhile, finished reading Forager; going back to Terry Jones for a chapter or two before tackling the second book of the series, Infiltrator.

I'm reading Steven Baxter's _Voyage_. It's much dryer than I expected. But still ok so far.

Baxter's a pretty dry author, but, nonetheless, one of my favourite "hard SF" authors. I've enjoyed every one of his books that I've read, the most recent of which was "The Time Ships", which is an authorised sequel to H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine".

Tana French's In the Woods was a Book Club nomination for Mystery that didn't win but I decided to read it anyway. It was terrific, so much so that I read the rest of the Dublin Murder Squad series. I hope she writes more.

Read it several years ago and was totally entranced. But, it is rather "dark" -- not so much with the murder/mystery, but in the psychology of the main investigator. Does that lighten up in the subsequent books?

And the book was excellent. Most enjoyable, especially being able to compare with the TV adaption, which was surprisingly faithful (with the usual reduction in the number of subsidiary characters). The TV series covers more than this first book. I shall certainly read the rest, but I shall spread them out a bit.

After Poldark I read The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince by Robin Hobb. A most enjoyable backstory to the later Six Duchies stories.

And now I'll read Dodger by Terry Pratchett .

That's so very, very wrong; it grated every. single. time. Good thing Lily was dead, so we didn't have to hear it too often. At least in later translations, they left that one alone.

Each book is written from the POV of a different investigator on the squad. So I'm going to say yes, Rob has had the most troubling events in his past to deal with out of the detectives (so far). But I did find that "darkness" part of the intrigue of the book.

Just finished "Ordeal in Otherwhere", by Andre Norton. This is the middle third of the "Warlock" omnibus, published by Baen, which I believe I bought in 2002. Baen description: "Charis Nordholm was sold into slavery by the outlaw colony on the planet Demeter. The trader, Jogon, who holds her contract, was on his way to Warlock to trade with the Wyvern. But the alien witches had ominous plans of their own, and both Charis and Shann Lantee found themselves fighting for their lives . . . "

Typical Norton. OK, but not outstanding. Moderately recommended.

My current read is "A tap at the window" by Lynwood Barclay, only just getting into it but seems a very good read. Just finished a Trilogy about the "The outlaws of Ennor" by Michael Jerck. It entails 3 books about the finishing of the Templers. Loved it.

Finished Expatriot; satisfactory ending, kind of predictable, kind of angsty (kind of YAish)... still working on the Terry Jones book, but it's not as engaging as I'd hoped.

Need something different. blah
