I got my Kobo Glo HD two or three weeks ago with firmware 3.14. I replaced the internal microSD right away with a 16 GB card by using The Magic Memory Upgrade Mod. Immediately afterwards, I installed KSM07 Update 4 and copied koreader and vlasovsoft directories to .adds. I couldn't activate my Kobo Glo HD with the corresponding ksm script because the Kobo Glo HD database doesn't contain any user entry (other Kobo readers seems to come with exactly one user entry the script is looking for before it adds a second one to activate the reader). I added an user entry in the database myself. I was then able to update my reader to 3.15 and 3.16 respectively and could also download all dictionaries. I re-installed KSM07, started nickel, connected my Glo HD to a computer and started to copy some epubs:
1. Adobe Digital Editions -> works okay; after disconnecting the Kobo Glo HD database is updated -> no corruption
2. side-loading books to a (hidden) folder -> works okay; after disconnection the database is updated, books not in hidden folders are added -> no corruption
3. calibre (Kobo Touch Driver plugin) -> seems to work; after disconnection the database is updated, books are missing from shelves -> database corruption (this reliably happens every time when using calibre after connecting from nickel)
I replaced the database with a good backup database file. And connected the Glo HD now from KSM with usb_enable.sh. Copied some books with calibre, disconnected the reader, opened nickel (new books not yet in library/shelves), toggled usb (simulating connecting by usb and then disconnecting) -> database is updated, all new books show up -> no database corruption.

Looks promising. Thank you for reporting again.

You can, but if you don't really need the disk space, better keep it. The old KSM 7 will help us to replace the current test version with KSM 8, or maybe with another (safer) test version, since preparing v 8 will need some time).
The version you are running now was only thought for testing purposes. Starting nickel and koreader, or connecting to pc is safe, but do not explore other KSM things at this point. Do not try to make KSM download a Kobo FW package via wifi! Even downloading a FW package by nickel might possibly be dangerous!

Currently, I see some options you have:
  • uninstall the test version and use only the standard software
  • uninstall the test version, reactivate KSM 7, and do not add books by the calibre with the kobo driver until you have upgraded to KSM 8
  • continue using the test version, but be aware that there are some risks
If you tell me your decision I prepare the necessary files. Please do not try to do it on your own (apart from factory resetting, if you prefer that option).
At a later point I could offer to replace the current test version by another one that is slightly safer.

And since you are filling constantly your reader, don't fill it up to the brim! Maybe it is better to leave 150 MB or so unused.

  • select "koreader additions" > "start nickel koreader switch"
  • in nickel open "switchtokoreader" (png) in order to switch to koreader
  • in koreader select the home symbol in order to switch back to nickel
If you select "koreader additions" > "start koreader nickel switch", it will begin with starting koreader, everything else is as above.

Hi,

now I put a large number of books (more than 1.000) on the reader and everything worked fine. The reader took a very long time processing the books but the database is ok.

I will keep the test version until the next version of KSM comes out. If you need me to test-drive a new preliminary version, I would be happy to help.

Regarding koreader:
Is there no way to configure this as the default? There are the two options in the koreader section of the config insertNickelKoreaderSwitch and insertKoreaderNickelSwitch. I set both of the to the value true, but this doesn't change a thing. This means that I have to start Nickel using "start nickel koreader switch" all the time. And if I start Nickel automatically from KSM then I end up in KSM after using the png.

And regarding the configuration: Is it possible to change the values e.g., for the frontlight level in the configuration?

And since I haven't said it enough times: Again thank you for the fantastic work :-)

Cheers, Joe

Thank you for the offer. If you keep the kbmenu folder it will be slightly more convenient to replace the current test version with another.

No.

It changes whether the switch items are listed in the menu (true is the default value, if you put it to false, the switch options will not be shown in the menu).

This is how it was originally intended.

Do you mean the light level of KSM (koreader, pbchess, nickel have there own values)? For KSM you can change it "[general]" > "add item" > "frontlightOnLevel=N". Currently there are only three values offered (4,10,20). They were given as examples and you can increase the number of optional values by yourself (in KSM 07). However, on your test version this is not possible, since you would have to edit a file on the system partition.

Hi,

ok, then I'll keep the folder. Disk space is definitely no problem...

When you say that you originally intended to have the system work like I described above, then this means that it doesn't yet work this way (which is what I observe), or that you gave up that intention? Meaning, do you plan to implement this?

Regarding the light levels: Being able to edit these values would be quite nice :-)

Cheers, Joe

I meant to say that the intended function of "start nickel" was exaclty to start nickel. If your point is that you do not want to have to go into a submenu in order to select "start nickel koreader switch", you can configure:

[koreader] > add item > combineKoreaderAdditions=false > return > save and exit

The effect of this is that the sub menu "koreader additions" disappears and instead the items of that menu ("start nickel koreader switch", "start koreader nickel switch", "select koreader version", "find and open") get inserted into the main menu. If you feel that the main menu is now to crowded you can set "insertKoreaderNickelSwitch" and "selectKoreaderVersion" to false. Unfortunately, you cannot yet remove "find and open", I simply forgot to provide this option.

It is possible to automatically select "start nickel koreader switch" after boot. One would have to configure:
ksmAutoselectoption=start_nickel_koreader_switch
Since on your current version you cannot easily edit the file that contains the selectable options, you are out of luck for the moment.

I see you need soon a new preliminary version.

Hi,

only to let you know: I deleted all the books from the reader with calibre, unplugged, let it work, then plugged in again and threw large batches of books (500-2000) at it (checking the db at each step). Worked without any problems whatsoever. So this KSM version has passed my personal stress test :-)

Btw., when will you have a new version to test? Only to let me continue playing with the reader ...

Cheers, Joe

Good! Thank you very much for the repeated testing and reports.

Right now, I am rather busy. Maybe I can provide a test version next week.

jbaumann, Lilarcor,

It seems that I can upload KSM 08 prep 02 today. Before you try the new test version, please reenable KSM 07 and remove the old test version.

1) reenable KSM 07 (I take it for granted that there is still .adds\kbmenu on your device):
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive and copy it to .kobo
  • safely eject, disconnect, disable usb
  • (from KSM home) select "handle update" > "install update"

2) remove the old test version:
  • (from KSM [now again 07] home) select "scripts" > "remove KSM08prep.sh
  • reboot

Then install the new test version.
Attached Files
File Type: zip reenable_KSM07_delete_08prep.zip (3.8 KB, 136 views)
