Just saw this and can't help but wonder if Shannara might be on about 5 minutes with 55 minutes of commercials each episode:

I'd expect the typical 40-49 minutes of actual show. For those who are deathly allergic to television commercials (as seems to be the growing trend), there's still the dvr + ff option.

Sorry, tl;dr : where's it coming TO? I mean, are we talking Network (ye gods) or do we mean something like Netflix? Even in the event of something non-Network (like...Spartacus, let's say--it's one show I know was on one of the cable channels like HBO or something and I now see flying by my eyes on the dreaded Sci-Fi Channel), they find a way to butcher it down to 38 minutes for syndication, don't they?

Sometimes they have the first episode for free on Amazon, I will check it out and if I like it will buy the rest of the episodes and watch commercial free. MTV is notoriously bad for commercials, and I've noticed for popular shows, commercials are often even worse.

Was just thinking, they could speed it up like TNT did for Seinfeld to fit in more commercials. They could make the Shannara actors sound like the chipmunks--that would be entertaining :-)

It's on MTV.

I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mind commercials in television shows. Hell, I even pay for Hulu!

But Hulu commercials are like a dash of salt compared to all the salt in the ocean with cable TV I don't mind a few commercials. I do mind so many commercials that I forgot what I was even watching, and I discover I have grown a beard since the show was last on

You're weird. (Not that I wuv you less for it, though.) That's one of the things that makes me positively bonkers on Hulu--the forced-march commercial-watching. I wouldn't mind if I could fast-forward through the damned things.

No, I take that back. I bloody well WOULD mind. I mean, think about it: we've been so conditioned that we don't care that now, networks are taking shows that were COMPLETELY FREE TO US, send OTA (Over the Airwaves, via regular old antennae), recycling them in reruns, making us PAY to watch those reruns of formerly free content, and worse, forcing us to watch commercials, that we didn't have to watch the FIRST time around, due to technology? Really? And we think, what, that we're making advances here?

So, we're paying to watch reruns of formerly-free content WITH commercials. Are we idiots?

I have Hulu so that I can catch up on a UK (BBC) show that ran for 12 years, and it's cheaper for me to have 1 year of it versus buying the same show on Amazon. However, once that year is up, that's it. I don't mind paying for Netflix; yes, some of what's on there is former "free" TV, but at least it has a vast number of choices, even if most of them suck. Amazon Prime comes with the Prime membership, even if most of their choices are pretty lame--20-30 year old movies, etc. Yes, they have that deal with HBO, but so what? If you already have HBO, you've seen all the "good stuff" anyway. (And really: who has Amazon Prime that doesn't already have HBO, if you think about it?)

I don't particularly mind paying for AcornTV, either, as that's a small niche market. (I do object to their consistent inability to get the cc right, though. I tend to send them very nasty Twitter and FB messages--it's the only thing to which they respond--when the CC gets out of whack, as it does about once every week).

But paying for Hulu? Man, that's just...one step too far in some direction. It's like their "on demand" channels (Fox, et al) where again--you can't fast-forward or skip the commercials. I realize that they have their bones to make, but hell, just CHARGE for the damn shows, instead of this crap. But at LEAST don't insult me by making me watch adverts. That's just...downright infuriating. (Oh, and really? They can't even TELL you which shows have cc, and which don't? And moreover, make it almost impossible to get it to work? For those of us with a deaf or near-deaf person in the house, GOSH, THANKS A LOT!)

I could easily live in a world without commercials. Hulu has made it easier to get my wife to cut the cable cord. She gets to see her recent shows there, and it sort of takes the place of a DVR service. I watch Atlantis, and a few other shows on Hulu. X-Files on Hulu is commercial free and the early seasons are HD and look better than on Netflix. I think Netflix has good formatting seasons 6 and up of X-Files.

Good point. You might finish a novel during one night of cable TV

I'm a social TV watcher. I like to chit-chat (and poke fun at what we we just saw) during commercial breaks. *shrug*

Quote:

*slowly raises hand meekly*

I think we had HBO (or Cinemax, or some sh.... tuff) for a year or so 30 years ago, but I just never thought the programming was worth it. Maybe that's why commercials don't really bother me. Up until Netflix (two years ago), I'd never really watched any commercial-free television to spoil me.

I view my "premium" Hulu subscription as my $8 a month DVR with a busted fast-forward button. I'm paying for the ability to watch currently airing episodes at my leisure during the week they aired. Worth it to me (commercials and all).
