I found the book Hunger Games to be too dark for my tastes, which I guess was the point, so it was effective. But I had no interest in reading the rest of the trilogy.

Yeah, but the world is and was a nasty place.
She could have died long before her time trying to live quietly in some village when bandits or an army came through. Or rats with diseases. Lots of people die before their time and most of them get ignomy or obscurity. |

In a book a character can age 10yrs between the end of a chapter and the start of the next. It's not so easy in a movie, but you can do it. My favorite kind of fantasy shows the development of the hero and his abilities. Often starting with a significant disadvantage. A good story provides logical reasons for the young person's development into a hero. I like those where the development of magical abilities form a logical consistent result from the hero's efforts. The Farseer series hero starts out at 5 years old. Michael G. Manning's "Mageborn" hero Mordecai shows that logical progression of youth to hero and the development of Magic with consistent rules. Jim Butcher's great "Codex Alera" has the young powerless Tavi who grows up to the highest position in an ancient Roman type world. The "Recluse" books usually start with a young outcast, who ends up accomplishing whatever was needed to save the world.

If you can't identify with teens or even younger chidren saving the world (i.e. Narnia), then the book wasn't likely written for you. It was written for those very teens and younger children, who imagine themselves saving the world.

But not everybody can read a good book and appreciate it. I read good books, regardless of the targeted age group. I'm old enough to have a great nephew, and greatly enjoy the Harry Potter series, the books of Tamora Pierce and many so called young adult books. I also greatly enjoy many books written for adults.

I interpreted Ravensknight's post as meaning that a good book is one that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, not that every single reader is going to enjoy it; the latter is clearly not true for any book.
