Do you use Liberation Serif for anything in your document? For instance, for headings?

After you're done cleaning up this document, if you'd like to specify a default font for future documents -- for instance, Times New Roman -- there are good directions here:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/21423...ce-writer.html

Finally, do you use "Styles" for your documents?
Thank cromag. Would definitely love to make Times New Roman the default. Will explore that link.

And no, don't use Liberation Serif for anything. It just snuck in there.

And yes, using styles now: Text Body. See screenshot in previous post for what caused the problem--my sloppy typing habits!

In case you haven't already discovered this:

In Libre Office, if you want to search for font families, go to edit -> find and replace, and in the find-replace panel click "other options" near the bottom. Click the "format" button and on the "font" tab, you will be able to select font family, size, etc. and other format properties on other tabs as well. Make your selections, click OK, and in the main find-replace panel leave the "search for" and "replace with" fields blank.

To clear the format properties click the "no format" button.

Oh, and you can also search for paragraph styles as well.

I've been using OpenOffice/LibreOffice since before v1, and I never noticed that. Thanks

I will admit I was somewhat surprised I had to go to Find & Replace and not just Find to be able to use those options.

THAT is amazing. Just what I needed. I was prepared to search visually 48,000 words for a few lines of Liberation Serif in the quite similar Times New Roman. You have saved me (and my eyes) a lot of time (and eye strain). THANKS!

p.s. Nice concise explanation too!

I never use the little Find dialogue. I've re-mapped CTRL-F to bring up the Find & Replace dialogue, because the Find dialogue irritates me.

I installed Ubuntu as I wanted to install some programs to turn a Kobo into a secondary monitor.

First off, Ubuntu kept shutting off USB networking after 30 seconds.
Then Ubuntu decided I couldn't chmod +x a file on the USB device. Previously it allowed me to do it no problem. So I found I was actually going backwards. Presumably the OS upgraded itself.

I concluded Ubuntu is a PITA. So ended my adventures in Ubuntu land.

Ah, Rizla, don't give up on Ubuntu so easily. I don't have the skills to help you but I'm sure somebody here or at LinuxQuestions https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ could. It takes a little getting used to but Ubuntu is great!

I didn't know this, either. Thanks!

I did know there was at least one add-on that allowed for "font searches" but it hasn't been updated in a very long time and I assumed it was abandoned.

Good to hear that you're using styles -- they're definitely a MAJOR improvement over how most people use word processors. You seem to have a good grasp on your problem now, but I'd also highly recommend that you not use the "Default" style for any paragraphs, always assigning a style like "Text Body". If you set the "next style" rules correctly, things will flow much better and you won't have to keep selecting the styles, except when starting a new heading. Also, be sure to set your base font in your default style... remember that all styles "inherit" their attributes from other styles. Think of "Default" as being just the base style that all others are derived from -- set the font of that style, and all of the others (if you haven't already over-ridden the inheritance) will update accordingly.

I haven't really played around much with USB Networking.

But I am completely unsurprised that you couldn't set a file on a USB as executable, assuming the USB drive was formatted with FAT32 which they usually are.
FAT32 has never supported extended linux attributes, you will need to mount the drive as executable (and then all files get the executable bit dynamically applied).

I really like Ubuntu, but prefer Debian or Linux Mint (LTS). What I don't like about Ubuntu is it pushes through lots of updates, including Kernel updates that break things. After losing my wireless firmware after an Ubuntu update I moved all my machines to Linux Mint (17 the current LTS). Mint does not push through Kernel updates, but allows the user to select them if they wish, unlike Ubuntu.

I find using the command-line backends for things is much easier.
Most package managers, I think, allow you to hold a package in the configuration file. apt has apt-mark which can mark a package to be held.

Thanks twowheels. I just write a simple document. No headings. Just text. So I just keep it Text Body through and through. I'll do the chapters and such in Sigil.

I'm going to wait till I finish these two books I'm working on to switch the default font to Times New Roman. (Don't want to jinks things!)
