I'm not going to force anything on my desktop.....and may just standby a while on the laptop, but googling around it seems Microsoft may have screwed the pooch once again.... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Anyway, from what I have read it seems that most people are not having issues either upgrading or installing Windows 10. I upgraded my crappy old laptop that I barely use from 7 to 10 without a single hitch whatsoever. ![]() |

It is worth noting that the upgrade is only free for a year. If you wait until July 30, 2016 to upgrade, there will be a fee.

A bit of googling revealed the error code C1900208 indicates my security software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) is blocking the installation. And that the Media Creation Too might allow an upgrade without wiping the drive. Being a loyal M$ fanboi I'm inclined to blame Symantec rather than Microsoft.

I must say it's growing on me.
I've managed to get rid of those two icons (the search and that silly notifications) which means my bar is nicely empty again (except for the OneDrive icon in the System tray and my two pinned applications: Firefox and Explorer. I have some colours back on my title bars of my windows. I do like the very angular layout of those windows Now I need to get rid of that huge part of my start menu... I don't have any tiles in there, nor do I want them in there, but it still shows that huge block... Found out I can just resize that start menu ![]() Edit: Ok, that start menu is still an issue, you cannot add applications on the left side of it, only on that annoying big thing on the right... I don't care for those tiles, I want a simple small icon list on the left side! Last edited by Sweetpea; 07-30-2015 at 03:40 PM. |

This is something that always pisses me off about MS --- their errors and even the details on their website are worthless. Why can't it just say security error installing, please disable your Security Software and try again....instead it give a cryptic failure and then tries day after day after day to no avail.....totally stupid. Did they not even test this is a real-world scenario? |

What pi$$es me off is that they've known for months that Win10 was coming and there was nary a peep out of them until the rubber meets the road. And I'm just waiting for them to scream that it's Microsoft's fault!

Yep, I've had a few issues with conflicts and removing it etc....Guess I'll just standby and see what happens.... I'd try downloading the iso but based on duckie's experience I'm not sure it can be used to do an in-place upgrade.....maybe it can....who knows....it used to be my life, but these days I hate wasting time on this sort of sH*t!

I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 via the Media Creation tool. Straight off the net. It offered the choice to upgrade in situ or download the files for another computer. Pick the latter and it will either prep a bootable flash drive or give you an ISO. |

After two frustrating days with 8 failed automatic download attempts, several unsuccessful attempts to download manually, and - finally - a successful manual download but failure to install, the Media Creation Tool worked flawlessly. This thread provided the help I needed, and I'm grateful to everyone who posted.
