I'd never heard of it until the question was brought up. Not really looked into it.

I have a NAS for the family's music and photos, but it is more of a backup drive than anything else. I have my personal laptop set up with LAMPS so I can journal using a locally installed WordPress, and I am thinking about creating a local Wiki for one of my storylines, but I have no real need to create a 'cloud' in my home proper.

I've only tried it on my Raspberry Pi, but it seemed to work pretty well, and there are some nice features.

My only concern would be that I don't know how it would cope if the server computer wasn't on 24/7. It might be fine, but it might have issues. I guess the thing to do would be to try it (with some files that you have copies of elsewhere) and see.

I've not looked at it at ALL, so forgive any comments that don't make sense- but -- SOMEBODY has to do backups on the data. [I'm a backup person in my daytime job.] So if this involves running your own server and being your own cloud, without involving the rest of the world at all? (like I say, I didn't read it) ... then somebody still has to think about making backups of the data, to whatever degree you care about being able to get it back.

Like, what if you need the file you had a year ago and deleted a long time ago? That's not something I care about at home, but at work, people might. Like, what about if the house burns down -- can you recreate the data when you've bought a new house and a new computer? A business needs to be able to do that; do you need or want that capability?

You need to think about it, anyway.

You need to think about it, anyway.
Your comments make a lot of sense You're right, if you run ownCloud on your own hardware then backups and everything else are down to you.

You know, I didn't realize owncloud was just server to server. I figured there must be an acutal cloud in there somewhere. I mean, somebody else's server functioning as cloud. Owncloud is definitely not for me.

Well, it's server-client, like Dropbox and Copy. You do need a machine to run as a server, though. It doesn't have to be a full-on rack server with masses of memory, it can be as low-end as a Raspberry Pi.

That said, as badgoodDeb says, you'd need to set up your own backup routine etc.

Thanks for the explanation, Russ. I can see how this would be very valuable for a lot of people (but I don't think I need it). I think I was just intrigued because it was in my Ubuntu Software Center.

I would be using it as a file server, not backup.
That said, it would be less hassle to buy a decent NAS machine. I just would rather save the money.

For a file server, you'd normally install Samba (for Windows clients) or NFS (for Linux/Unix clients). I'm not sure what you'd use for Mac, I'm afraid :/

On Ubuntu, install the samba4 or nfs-kernel-server packages, plus any dependencies.

If you have a dedicated box, then installing FreeNAS on it is probably the easiest option.

LibreOffice is switching fonts on me as I type

I'm typing a big document (a novel) and every once in a while I hit something on the keyboard (seems to be around the right arrow key or the Ins "0" button on the number keypad) that switches the font of the paragraph I'm typing from Times New Roman to Liberation Serif.

Two questions:

#1) What is causing this?

I can switch the font back of course when I find it, but this is a 47,000 word doc and it will be quite the challenge to visually locate the Liberation Serif (many of the paragraphs are only a line). I opened a new doc and typed an "a" in Liberation Serif and copied and pasted that into my Times New Roman doc, hoping it would find any Liberation Serif "a" but it just found any old "a," including Times New Roman "a"s.

#2) Is there a way I can scan my original doc for the Liberation Serif that is in there?

Thanks.

Are you using more than one font (or size)? Can you just do a "select all" and change the whole document back to Times New Roman? (I'm a Mac user most of the time, so I may be thinking Mac based. And I haven't directly answered your question.)

I don't know any easy way to search for font attributes. I've never encountered a situation like this.

Do you use Liberation Serif for anything in your document? For instance, for headings?

After you're done cleaning up this document, if you'd like to specify a default font for future documents -- for instance, Times New Roman -- there are good directions here:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/21423...ce-writer.html

Finally, do you use "Styles" for your documents?

I may try that "select all" and see if I can change it back to Times New Roman. Thanks for the suggestion. Better Red helped me figure out what the problem was. See screenshot.
