A billion upgrades in a year is a lot of upgrades each day.
I checked if the update was installed (it was). I didn't try uninstalling/reinstalling, instead I ran the batch file, which made the icon show up pretty quickly, and than I reserved my copy.

Yeah, it's not like it's been sprung on them at the last minute.
I'm half expecting the Sony support pages to say "warning: kittens and puppies may die if you upgrade before we tell you to"

I ran the MS check and that's all green ticks and saying good to go

The whole "software corruption" thing sounds suspicious.
OS upgrades don't "corrupt" apps unless those apps are doing something they shouldn't, like replacing OS dlls or hijacking the registry. They just make non-compliant apps stop working.

Bad choice of words, Sony.

Now I'm flashing back to the CD rootkit era.
I am concerned about their motives as well. In the past SONY would considered one of their computers out of warranty if you upgraded the OS on the system.

It's perhaps a question of wishing to delay upgrades until their support staff are trained in Windows 10.

Really?
Well, that would explain it.

Did they insist patches and updates go through them, too?
(I think Samsung tried something along those lines.)

I wonder if those folks realize MS is looking to triple the distribution channels for Surface. At some point they may stop licensing windows to any oem that asks. With the move to cloud services MS is taking on ever more of the support burden for Windows systems so oems are going to need to offer a real value add to get away with a lot of their old practices.

MS has the obligatory launch web site all prepped:

http://www.cnet.com/news/microsoft-p...utorial-guide/

Quote:

The launch site is trying to stir excitement through Microsoft's Windows 10 "Upgrade your world" theme. The site displays live tweets from Windows 10 fans from around the world as the new OS will be available in 190 different countries. Microsoft also has planned "fan celebrations" on Wednesday in 13 cities around the world. These celebrations will offer hands-on opportunities, demos, entertainment and "opportunities to meet the Windows team," according to the company.

Further, the site has listed 10 reasons why you should upgrade to Windows 10, including:

1. Familiarity in Windows 10
2. Do personal things with Cortana on Windows 10
3. Do unexpected things with Microsoft Edge
4. Game Epically on Windows 10
5. Do multiple things at once with Windows 10
6. Security in Windows 10
7. Say "Hello" to Windows Hello on Windows 10
8. A look at the great built-in apps in Windows 10
9. Continuum on Windows 10
10. Coming July 28th

From the launch site, you can also click a button to "Upgrade for free," which takes you to a page that explains how to reserve your free copy of Windows 10. There's also a "Read the FAQ" link, which takes you to a Windows 10 Q&A page that answers a host of questions about the upgrade.

To delve more into the inner workings of Windows 10, Microsoft has also published a 14-page tutorial guide highlighting the OS's key features. The guide dives into such features as the Cortana voice assistant, the new Edge web browser, the Xbox gaming app and the new Start menu.
More at the source.

So I finally had a chance to play with 8.1 while not standing at a counter with the laptop bolted down as to not get stolen. The Mrs picked up a HP Stream and after playing with it for a bit my opinion of 8.1 has changed. Not to say I won't upgrade to 10 asap just to say my opinion of it isn't as bad as it once was.

I'm a little nervous. What do I need to do for the big upgrade tomorrow? It's a Samsung ATIV Book 4 laptop.

As said before, if you can pull an image of your hard drive. So you at least can return and restore your computer to the state it was in before the upgrade. If you do not like the new system. That way you should lose nothing or at least save most of your old setup.

The upgrade isn't tomorrow.
Certainly not for typical consumers.

Tomorrow they *start* downloading the release version to the Insiders who helped test it. Some time after that, they'll start shipping the upgrades to those of us that reserved it depending on a variety of factors ranging from when we reserved to the compatibility of software and peripherals installed.
And then they'll start on the people who request it after tomorrow.

Also, that is MS shipping out the upgrade.
If you have it set to ask you before it installs, you'll have until next summer to upgrade at your leisure.

Some folks who reserved might end up waiting until the new year.
And if they listen to Sony.

(Now, you have relatively recent hardware so odds are you'll get the download before back to school season.)

I am just going to have to close my eyes and hit the button when its time. . I am not super good with computers, other than the basics and using them for a long time. Can't say I ever had any issues updating to a new system, although that usually happened because I needed a new computer. I have 8 on a newish Asus netbook and I have 7 on my main computer which is a desktop. I know how to back up my files including calibre library to the cloud, but that would be the extend of my skills.

Eventually I have always gotten used to any new versions, although 8 did drive me insane until I set the thingies to desktop and go the start thingy back. I don't like those tile thingies, can't even figure out how to personalize that stuff so I never go there on my netbook. It boots to the desktop. How I did that, I don't remember.

I have a feeling I'll be ok. No going back in any case as I have no clue how do do "image" or what that is or how to even use such a thing.

Like I said, I am pretty easy going on this stuff and haven't had really any issues with any windows versions yet. I never used Vista so can't speak to that one. Went from xp to 7.

I will do the update first on the W8 netbook in any case. Whenever it gets here. I signed up on both machines as I did get the logo thingy in the task bar on both.

As long as you're confirmed for the update, your system checks out OK and you don't have updates blocked, then I don't think you have to do much. The program will be downloaded in the background. It's big (about 4-6gb) so it could take quite a few hours, depending on traffic and server load and internet speed, and then when all the necessary downloads are done, you'll see a message in your notification area that it's ready to be installed.

Those in the insider program started getting the downloads a few weeks ago. For others, the downloads have already started today and should continue throughout the coming days and weeks.

If you want to install it as soon as possible, keep your internet connection active and your computer running most of the time for the next few days until you get the download. Also make sure you don't have updates blocked and that you are current with all updates.
