I really need to look for a new saddle for my bike. Not only does it have a puncture (duct taped it to prevent the gel from oozing out), but somehow the outside layer stays moist after it has rained, which can't be wiped away. Which leaves me with a wet or damp bottom when cycling just after or during the rain.
I'm thinking of getting the Selle Royal Manhattan for it's water resistance, big springs (we've got a lot of uneven streeting/cobbles in my city) and soft gel. |

Well, I don't have a driver's license and it's also faster to cycle around my city than drive around. At home I put my bicycle inside. Only a couple of weeks a year, when looking after a friend's dog, does it stand outside. I could put it in the garden underneath the little shelter, but that would mean I have to drive through the spider infested back alley. Having a choice between having to wade through spiderwebs at least twice a day or having a wet butt occassionally I choose the latter ![]() However, now I need to get a new saddle anyway I'm making sure it's one that can handle wet conditions. |

My rant du jour: Apparently, it's not uncommon, after a heart attack, for someone's taste buds to go completely batsh*t. (This is theorized as being due to the meds, or even something in the tubing used for IV's...the theories are pretty endless, and not remotely useful.) Mr. Hitch's have, and big-time. Everything tastes BAD to him. I don't mean, "oh, gosh, it's not as good as it used to be," I mean, meat tastes rancid, bread tastes burned...it's a real issue. He's lost 10lbs, and while that doesn't make him underweight (yet), it's getting close. (We both stay pretty close to our fighting weights). It's now becoming a "thing," by which I mean, it's worn on him and it's not doing much for my infamously sunny disposition, either. He puts things in his mouth and has to work at not spitting them out. He can manage some types of fresh fruit, which he has always liked, but they still don't taste "quite right" to him. No meat yet has been edible. No veggies at all, so far. He made a Bernaise sauce last night (honestly, I thought that was pretty, uh, enthusiastic, all things considered) and he couldn't touch it, it tasted burnt. {sigh}. NONE of his old standbys seem to be viable. Right now he's being sustained on fruit, jello (which he's NEVER eaten before) and instant pudding. That's about all he can manage, after--what's it been, 10 days only? (Sheesh, feels like a million years and a nanosecond at the same time, and before anyone says anything, yes, I know that a nanosecond is actually a measurement of distance, not time.) URGHGHGHG. We see the Cardiac Surgeon for his follow-up on Thursday, and I hope that he'll have something useful, although from what I've read, I suspect that the result will be "this too will pass." Oh, yeah, and the BP meds are knocking him out at least 2x daily, while we're griping. (And I'm bloody hungry, too! I hate eating in front of him, given the givens, so...he's not the only one losing weight.) </rant> Hitch |

Oh, Hitch! I'm so sorry to hear that! Being able to enjoy food is so fundamental.

Did they start him on Coumadin / warfarin, to thin his blood and prevent blood clots? My taste buds changed (though only a little) when I started Coumadin. It took 6 months before certain things tasted okay again. Salsa, in particular, for me. And other tomato based foods.
[ Mine wasn't a heart attack; just blood clots in the lungs and a leg. Might be a different issue. ] Unforch, other than possibly identifying a cause (Coumadin?) I've no helpful suggestions. Just sympathy. Last edited by badgoodDeb; 07-28-2015 at 05:07 PM. |

@ Hitch If it is a problem with blood thinners medication (wich wouldn't surprise me as this stuff isn't a fountain of health as far as I heard) Mr. Hitch might consider taking alternative i.e. natural blood thinners. If they work efficiently enough on him the need for the pharmaceutical poison no longer be given.
Specifically I had Proanthocyanidin in mind. Its extracted from grape seeds. |

Hitch - having dealt with taste bud changes in a patient after chemo ... try various flavors of the "Ensure" type supplements & breakfast replacement drinks - there's a wide variety - and what seems totally yucky to you can taste wonderful to 'sick' taste buds.
Also, try freeze-dried camping food -- sometimes food with that weird 'processed' aftertaste will appeal ... trail mix, etc. And explore garnishes/sauces -- esp. if you don't ordinarily use them - teriyaki, other umami flavors, etc. |

Having dealt with heart attack mouth one year then chemo mouth 18 months later I learned to provide many condiments and gave up cooking because I couldn't do anything right. Now unless something is specifically asked for, I just feed myself. There are almost always leftovers, if they are wanted, then have at it
Yeah, I'm grumpy about the whole thing |
